Why Is December 17th A Major Day In The History Of TV And Animation?

It was the start of  The Simpsons, 25 years ago that day.

Since its debut on Sunday December 17, 1989, the show has broadcast nearly 600 episodes and the 26th season began last week on September 28, 2014. Click here for the official site.

IMDB calls the show "The satiric adventures of a working-class family in the misfit city of Springfield."

At USC School of Law, UCLA School of Law and at Southwestern School of Law I have given variations of a  presentation, with CLE credit, titled “Confusion between Marketing  & Advertising: Why and what difference does it make to Law Students, Judges and Lawyers. Plus the Nine P’s of Marketing.” I use examples including TV and other media.

I use specific, current examples of Yelp.com, Verizon, Metro/Expo, small businesses and large businesses. Plus the famous Sleekcraft factors. I present contemporary examples; the presentation is fun, educational, and interactive. I have also given international/global seminars and my talk will use both USA and global examples.

As a Marketing and Advertising expert, for the past 35+ years  I have worked full-time in Marketing while teaching Marketing and related subjects to graduates and undergraduates one, two or three nights a week at USC, CSUN, LMU CSUN among others.

My expert witness cases have involved: marketing; advertising; breach of contract; business practices; business and professions code compliance and violations, including unfair competition, unlawful, or unfair, or fraudulent business activities; contracts, sponsorships; false advertising; trade libel; media; trademark infringement; intellectual property; patents; usage of models; advertising agencies; trade secrets;  client business practices; unfair advertising; deceptive advertising; violations of Lanham Act; unjust enrichment; trademarks at issue; comparative advertising/promotion; licensing; packaging; the value of advertising and media campaigns. Cases involved contracts between partners, directors, advertising agencies, clients, advertisers, suppliers, distributors, production firms and media.

I have copyrighted and developed the Nine P’s of Marketing They include “People” or target market(s), Product” or Service, “Price,” “Promotion,” “Place” or Distribution, “Planning,” “Partners,” “Presentation,” and “Passion.”It's different out there. Beware. Or be aware of what's out there.

The Nine P's/9P's help identify marketing problems in a number of areas and help develop marketing’s objectives, strategies, tactics and solutions.  The Nine P's are insightful. In Marketing. the "Customer," or potential customers are king, but are missing in the 4P's.

I consult and teach using the concepts and practices of the Nine P's/9P's of Marketing.

There is much more on the 9P's at here or here. In the study and practice of Marketing, Marketing and Brand Managers develop plans, strategies and tactics. The Nine P’s include these important components:
  • People (Segmentation and Targeting)
    • This "P" is important especially for my example.  They will target different consumers on a CPM basis, which is under media planning or Cost Per Thousand." People or targeting has almost always been left out of the traditional "Marketing Mix."
    • Almost every diagram includes the four P's with "Consumer" or "People" or "Potential Buyers" in the middle of the circle. There needs to be more focus on the "Customer," or "People."
    • "People," market segments utilizing demographics, geographics, psychographics, behavioral characteristics and technographics are a vital component of the 9P's. Once a target market is chosen, the organization can develop its marketing strategies to target this market segment.
    • There are still questions:
      • Can the segments be accessed?  How about with television advertising? Marketing strategies need to be adapted for the different tiers or segments. Instead of viewing the market as a uniform group of customers with similar potential, the firm needs to view them as distinct groups or segments with differing potential.

What Is A Millennial? Millennials Are The Generation Born Between 1982 And The Early 2000’s.

I have taught Marketing and Advertising plus Business strategies since 1975.

I have been asked about the milliennials, especially outside the classroom by marketing pros and human relations/personnel directors. It's a tough generation to employ. And in future posts I may comment on that aspect.

Let's do a couple of definitions and refinements.

Some researchers use the  birth years ranging from the early 1980s to the early 2000s. Usually “denoting or relating to a period of a thousand years, our present day "Millennials" are a target segment in Marketing, also a segment under “People,” in the Nine P’s of Marketing.

Millennials are also known as the Millennial Generation or Generation Y, and are the demographic group which followed Generation X.

Researchers have used  the phase…a person reaching young adulthood around the year 2000. There are no really precise dates when the generation starts and ends. It's important to note that the years are not set in stone.  Sometimes the year or years start as early as 1978 and/or eight years later in 1985.

From Zogby Analytics:
“Almost 90% of Milllennials say their phones never leave their sides. The first thing that 80% of Millennials do every morning is reach for their smart phones, and 78% spend more than two hours a day texting, surfing, talking, tweeting and — more importantly for businesses — shopping, banking and more. In their study, almost “90% snap shots daily or weekly, and not just "selfies.”

It's tough out there in both employment and in business. Beware. Visit here for more insights and true Marketing and Advertising Trivia.

News, Well Not Really. NFL Plans To Change Player Conduct Policy. The Nine P's Of Marketing Are Being Used In This Example.

What a mess created by the players and the PR bumbling by the NFL brass.

Here’s the Marketing and Promotion "tipping point:"
  • "Procter & Gamble (P&G) said it is canceling its major breast cancer awareness promotion with the NFL. Thar would have been big in October.
It’s the latest sponsor to the NFL's growing problems. The PR bumbling and the poor player decisions and violence issues are major topics in the news. We were at a wedding party last night and people, fans and non-fans were discussing the mess the NFL is in.

Goodell responded as NFL commissioner: “Several of our sponsors have promotions in the marketplace that are inconsistent with what is going on. We understand that. What we said is that we are going to clean up our house.”

I use in my expert witnessing, marketing consulting, and with my marketing and advertising teaching the Marketing practice called the 9P’s of Marketing.

I see parts of the following P’s in Goddell’s quote:
  • People or (Targeting)
  • Promotion, with PR and with Sponsorships=Advertising and Media.
  • Planning
  • Partners
  • Product
  • Presentation
  • Passion
  • Place, as in different teams, geography and distribution.
Oh,, I can add Price since the sponsors are cutting out. That's all Nine of Marketing's 9P's.

To me the major tipping point was P&G canceling their promotion. They are suspending activities or promotions with the NFL. I don't believe anyone asked if P&G was pulling out it's TV dollars and allowing spots in the games.  That would have been a good question from a reporter.

The stress point came earlier last week, when the Minnesota Vikings’ Adrian Peterson watched his partnership ("Partner" in the 9P’s of Marketing) deal with Nike got suspended, due to child abuse allegations.

Then Radisson hotels suspended its sponsorship with the Vikings.

There are many ways to break down the practice of Marketing. At USC School of Law, UCLA School of Law,  at Southwestern School of Law and others (I am giving a presentation at Pepperdine University on Tuesday of this week on the 9P's of Marketing), I have given variations of a "What is Marketing" presentation, with CLE credit.  One title is “Confusion between Marketing  & Advertising: Why and what difference does it make to Law Students, Judges and Lawyers. Plus the Nine P’s of Marketing.”

I use specific, current examples of Yelp.com, Verizon, Metro/Expo, small businesses and large businesses. Plus the famous Sleekcraft factors. Smokers Pay More. Looking At People In The Nine P's Of Marketing Plus Price At Hotels And Car Rental Firms.

Have you thought about the cleaning fees for smokers?  How about getting a room? It appeared that many smoke in Spain and in Italy. But we were from California and the hotels seemed to know that we didn't want a smoker's room.

We just came back from 10 days in Europe, We are non smokers. Smokers pay more and they do not have the access to rooms as they use to.

Plus I read recently that smokers are surprised by punitive cleaning charges. I remember going into a hotel room and having to walk down to the front desk. I asked for a non smoking room. The front desk clerk said it is a non smoking room. But when we went back he could smell that it wasn't anymore.

Did you know that hotels and car rental firms charge to clean rooms?

It's tough out there. Beware. Visit here for more insights and true Marketing and Advertising Trivia.
