First you probably will never see either of these movies on an in flight movie screen. You could if you brought a DVD or two.
Both movies have marketing, planning, presentation and promotional characteristics, all under the nine (9) P's of Marketing.
For FedEx and American Airlines they may not have paid for "product placement" which would fall under "Promotion" in the 9P's of marketing but they both did pay or provided hard resources of planes, trucks, uniforms and other resources. Add advice on rules and procedures.
Simply, both FedEx and American Airlines paid for resources and provided services. Those are costs. I use the definition for resources as "a supply of money, materials, information/advice, staff, and/or other assets that can be drawn on by a person or organization, like a movie producer or studio."
FedEx supplied plenty of resources to the film (Staff and operations advice, uniforms, trucks, product, boxes) and AA set aside an Airbus 320 and a La Guardia gate, plus staff advice and information.
The producer and director of "Cast Away" said "We weren’t paid by anybody to place products in the movie. I did that in the past, and it wasn’t worth the little bit of money that they give you, because then you end up with another creative partner, which you don’t need. However, it just seemed to me that the whole integrity of the movie would be compromised if this was some phony trans-global letter delivery service, with some Hollywood fake logo and all that. It wouldn’t seem like it would be real. So very simply, we asked Federal Express for their permission to use their logo, and they could’ve said no."
But FedEx did say yes and provided a lot to add authenticity and integrity to the film, "Cast Away." Same with American Airlines and USAirways for "Sully."
FedEx initially was asked and their first answer or first instinct was "no." Their plane crashed with all of the packages. Not a great visual for promotion
What did both get? Increased awareness, name recognition, promotion and goodwill.

Think and feel that the Department of Transportation has now given seven (7) airlines flight approval between USA and Havana.
They are:

The Nine P's of Marketing include these important components or elements:
- Planning
- People
- Arnold Palmer sold a lot of product for a lot of companies to a lot of different targets. he was loved by many different people and fans. It's about Segmentation and Targeting. Add Positioning and you have STP.
- "People" or targeting has almost always been left out of the traditional "Marketing Mix." Almost every diagram includes the four P's with "Consumer" or "People" or "Potential Buyers" in the middle of the circle. There needs to be more focus on the "Customer," or "People."
- "People," market segments utilizing demographics, geographics, psychographics, behavioral characteristics and technographics are a vital component of the 9P's of Marketing. Once a target market is chosen, the organization can develop its marketing strategies to target this market segment.

- Place (Distribution)
- Price
- Promotion:
- Eight (8) major, strategic components: The communication elements include personal and non-personal communication activities. Activities that communicate the merits of the overall product, which include:
- Personal Selling/ Sales Force
- Advertising
- Sales Promotion
- Collateral Materials
- Direct Marketing (also referred to as Action or Direct Response Advertising
- Interactive/Internet/Web, Digital Media, Social Media
- Events and Experiences-
- Public Relations
Here are some strategic questions under Promotion::
- What should you promote?
- To whom should you promote?
- What economic and discount levels should you offer?
- What form of promotion should you offer? Features?
- How frequent?
- Partners:
- It is important to partner with firms that have similar corporate philosophies, who have agreed upon objectives and strategies.
- Presentation:
- The “P” or “Presentation” is the act of presenting any of the different 9P’s© and/or components to your customers, suppliers, wholesalers, retailers, sales force, marketing intermediaries, clients, employees, partners, and/or others.
- Look at “real” product and service experiences. I place “events and experiences” also under Promotion. While traditional marketing is based on target audience impressions/ views/ clicks/ exposure, experimental marketing involves engaging with consumers. Enabling consumers and “allowing” them to feel the brand.
- Passion:
- Those intense, driving or overmastering feelings, emotions in the planning, developing, pricing, promoting, partnering, selling and overall marketing of products or services.

It's Sunday night. Football on NBC? Watching more football this weekend? Seen enough Directv, Verizon, and auto ads this month?
I just say that it was reported that approximately 13% of all TVs whether on or off were watching NFL football on Sunday nights.
The top ten brands last year were: FanDuel, Nissan, Geico, Southwest Airlines, Chevrolet, McDonald's, Ford, Toyota, and Verizon.
Did you know that the TV cost for the NFL is pricier than ever. For the six year in a row the cost for a primetime TV spot on Sunday Night Football on NBC is? It's $717,375 for a 30-second unit. That's for one spot and would be used to support other promotional tactics under Promotion. There are eight elements. Advertising is only one. Sales people are another.

From Neilsen, in '15 the total amount of time spent consuming media on all devices averaged 9.5 hours per day. In '16, it has risen to 10 hours and 39 minutes.
On average, American adults watch about five hours per day of what is called traditional TV which was 19 fewer minutes than two years ago.
Tablets are now in 58% of homes, an increase of 17%.
The time spent consuming media on tablets has increased 63% to 31 minutes per day.
On cell phones it has increased 60% to about an hour per day.
