Is Performance, One Of The Nine P's Of Marketing? No, But "People," With Its Many Components Is.

Companies want growth. Companies want new customers. Companies need sales.

While performance or acquisition is important I would put that activity and the results under "People," or Segmentation, Targeting and Positioning.

Here's plenty on People, coming up.

Think the cost of acquiring customers or "people," is significantly higher than retaining customers unless they are totally turned off.

I am a senior Forensic Marketing Expert, Advertising expert, Advertising/Marketing consultant with Londre Marketing Consultants, LLC.

I created the 9P's of Marketing.

I own a copyright for the Nine P’s/9 P's of Marketing ©2007 concepts and Marketing practices, which augment the 1960's Marketing Mix (Product, Price, Promotion and Place) or the 4P’s by the American Marketing Association (AMA), Neil Borden and Jerome McCarthy in the study and practice of Marketing.

The Nine P's/9P's of Marketing help identify marketing problems in a number of strategic areas and help develop profitable marketing’s objectives, strategies, tactics and solutions. The 9P's are insightful. They were created for the digital age.

In Marketing, the "customer," or potential consumers should be the center of the universe or "king," but they are missing in the 4P's. I feel from my study and research that there needs to be more focus on the "Customer," or "People." "People" or market segments, which utilize demographics, geographics, psychographics, behavioral characteristics and technographics, are vital, learning components of the 9P's.

I consult and teach using these Marketing concepts and practices of the Nine P's/9P's of Marketing.

In the study and practice of Marketing, brand, advertising and marketing managers develop plans, strategies and tactics. The Nine P’s include these important concepts, practices and components:

  • People (Segmentation and Targeting)
    • In my 9P's, I stress that firms need to look and analyze potential, new, existing and repeat customers and users.
    • It's a special way at looking at diversity, if you review your gender, racial and other factors to your employees, customers, management, talent, board of directors, suppliers, partners, agencies, production and more.
    • To understand your "People" or market segments, you will need to or may need to utilize many characteristics, including demographics (such as age, family size, family life cycle, gender, income, occupation, education, religion, race, culture, generation, nationality, and social class), geographicspsychographics (buyers are on basis of psychological/personality traits, lifecycle, values), behavioral characteristics (needs and benefits, decision roles, user and usage-related variables, occasions, user status, usage rate buyer-readiness stage, loyalty status, attitude and multiple bases) and technographics (potential buyers may or may not have the software and computer skills. Think employees here too, which may be a vital component or components of the 9P's of Marketing.
    • Look at your actual customers. Then once a target market is chosen, the organization can develop its marketing strategies to target a market segment or market segments
    • It’s easy to market toward demographics, but brands can’t connect with people unless they learn how they think. By developing mindset-based marketing strategies, brand decision-making can better resonate with these segments, targets and audiences to increase consumer loyalty.
    • Brand managers need to look at at their customers and/or potential users. Do you understand your potential customer's purchase and usage touchpoints, their habits and how they engage with your brand? Competing for their attention?
    • Place "consumers," "People" or "potential buyers" in the middle of a circle. Find information or data on them. Add the other components in the other nine P's.
    • Post Covid 19 pandemic, I'm seeing "People" want an exceptional buying experience, which includes ethics and the company’s values. People are caring about convenience, comfort, ethics, and sustainability.  Look at home delivery of meals and everything on Amazon and Walmart or Target.
    • “People” or consumers prefer to buy “Products” from brands that share their values and “purpose-driven” movements.
    • Targeting mindsets allows brands to connect with consumers on an emotional level, which positively affects brands’ bottom lines.
    • Consumer and shopping data, plus first-party data can also help brands identify what people find valuable and important. You need to know where they live, how they work and play?
    • "People" or targeting has almost always been left out of the traditional "Marketing Mix," almost every diagram includes the four P's with Product, Promotion, Place and Price.
    • In Marketing, from my education, training, research and analysis plus testimony, there needs to be greater focus on the buyer, "customer," or "People," in both planning ad implementation.
  • Product and Services
    • Under the 9P's, it's the goods and service combination the firm offers to the target market, including variety of product mix, features, branding, designs, packaging, sizes, services, maintenance contracts, warranties and return policies.
    • A product (service) is anything that can be offered to a market for attention, acquisition, use or consumption that might satisfy a want or need.
  • Place (Distribution)
  • Price:
    • I’m finding that “People” or potential customers in my 9P’s, actual consumers are no longer buying “Products” and services based solely on “Price” and product quality.
    • An IBM study found that Nearly six in 10 consumers ("People") surveyed are willing to change their buying habits to reduce environmental impact. They found that over 70% would pay a premium of 35%, on average, for brands and products that are sustainable and environmentally responsible.
  • Planning
  • Promotion:
    • There are eight (8) major, strategic components or communication elements which are personal and non-personal communication activities.
    • The activities that communicate the merits of the overall product include:
      • Personal Selling/ Sales Force: Sales persons
        • Listen more than you talk. People who listen more, learn more, plus helps you position your service/product/solution or offering.
      • Advertising: There's an expression "It is only creative if the product or service sells." I wanted to add "It is only good media spending if it sells."
      • Sales Promotion
      • Collateral Materials
      • Direct Marketing (also referred to as Action or Direct Response Advertising)
      • Interactive/Internet/Web, Digital Media, Social Media:
      • Events and Experiences
      • Public Relations/PR
      • With inflation at increasing higher levels, we are seeing brick and mortar retailers needing physical traffic to survive. Gas prices at record levels are keeping customers from driving more. One stop shopping is more important than ever.

Bacon: Part Of Demarketing? Part Of Promotion?

Everyone seems to like bacon, except for vegans. I'm using bacon as a marketing post, using my 9P's

So, is bacon, part of demarketing? Or part of promotion?

What, Oscar Meyer is asking bacon eaters to stop for a day? It’s about World Vegan Day, too.

Abstain? This is promotion and an example of “people.” Kraft Heinz is commemorating World Vegan Day by wanting bacon lovers to refrain from eating bacon that day.

Their sweepstakes concerning the bacon-free pledge there’s a chance to win a lifetime supply of Oscar Mayer Hardwood Smoked Bacon.

So what about demarketing?

I teach that demarketing is any Marketing effort, strategy and tactic aimed at discouraging and/or decreasing demand for a product which a company or entity cannot supply in large-enough quantities, or it does not want to supply in a certain region where the high costs of distribution or promotion allow only a too little profit margin.

Common “demarketing” strategies, don’t include sweepstakes, and usually include higher prices, scaled-down promotion, promotional message changes and product redesign. Some owners, brand managers and marketing managers seek fewer customers and decrease demand for their product or service.

People eat bacon in national parks. Need an example related? National parks such as Yosemite want fewer visitors during their summer months.

In two days, it's World Vegan Day.  In a way I'm promoting the day by adding awareness.

Ye And/Or Kanye. Pretty Ugly Using A Celebrity When It Goes Wrong And Bad. Really Badly.

Kanye West or Ye has lost Gap, CAA and Balenciaga, as sponsors.

Add Adidas. Did you see the huge write off taken by Adidas concerning Ye or Kanye West?

It was Adidas who has terminated its partnership (seven years) with Kanye West over his anti-Semitic comments.  Not smart for Kanye. Adidas said its decision will impact its bottom line by up to $246 million.

Adidas communicated that:
  • “Adidas does not tolerate antisemitism and any other sort of hate speech. Ye’s recent comments and actions have been unacceptable, hateful and dangerous, and they violate the company’s values of diversity and inclusion, mutual respect and fairness.”

For any good or service, here are some of my major questions any brand manager or marketing manager should ask about using a celebrity?

  • Pretty sure, Tom and Fred did not use the product?
  • Is the celebrity appropriate for your product or service?
  • Does celebrity subtract from product or service? I love this one.
  • Does the celebrity add value? Or generate a good impression?
  • It used to be about "gut feelings." Now brand managers are asking “Show me the evidence that this is the right star or celebrity.” It’s both an art and science.”
  • Does the celebrity add to the product’s image?
  • How much is their fee?
  • How is the contract structured?
  • Do you pay the celebrity their fee, which will decrease media exposure/expenses?
  • Regarding Kayne: What about the history and future of the celebrity exposure? What about “after hour” behavior, any criminal record, FTC issues? Health?

How Popular Is Sports TV Watching? By Total Audiences? By The Top 100?

Here's a hint? Football.

Well, of the top 100 most watched tv broadcasts 75 or 75% were NFL games. Six were college football.

So we have 81% already.

How many did the NBA have? Zero

How many did the NFHL have? Zero

How many did MLB have? Zero.

Of the remaining 19 broadcasts, 11 were from the Olympics which isn't a yearly event.

Who's going to deliver more audiences in 2023?  Try NFL. Why? They have added another week to season, or 17 league games and they are adding Black Friday. I have a post on that too.

    • Targeting mindsets allows brands to connect with consumers on an emotional level, which positively affects brands’ bottom lines.

    • "People" or targeting has almost always been left out of the traditional "Marketing Mix," almost every diagram includes the four P's with Product, Promotion, Place and Price.

In The Competitive Marketplace, Should Every Product Or Service Brand Have A Story To Tell? With 9P's Of Marketing?

Yes, every brand, whether a Product or Service has a story to tell?

But ask if your firm or clients are they telling the right story?

Is your brand and story reaching the right people, potential purchasers? Repeat purchasers. Or what I call “People.” Segmentation/Targeting /Positioning.

Companies and brands need to gain a deeper understanding of their “People” ---the target market and target audiences (media term) – and how to reach them.

"Does Every Company Need Marketing?" From My Marketing Presentation To The Students At Van Lang University I Was Asked.

Question: "Does every company need Marketing?"

My answer to the students was:

  • Yes, but a company that says “We need “marketing” is a poorly formed request. The line “We have Marketing” is equally lame.

Sharpen your vocabulary. Put what you are learning to work. Review the 9P's of Marketing, which gives solutions and finds opportunities and problems.

Planning, research and concepts and insist that others do the same.

Figure out with research and observation what you need by using the 9P’s.

Marketing can build revenue and save on costs.

With the 9P’s of Marketing you can start managing your Marketing efforts right now with both a telescope and a microscope.

Ultimately, improve your bottom line.

The right Marketing belief or practice is not merely an idea the mind possesses; it is an idea that possesses the minds of each individual employee in trying to satisfy the consumer.
