Ton Of Alternatives: Advertisers And Consumers Are Pulling and Pushing Back On Twitter.

Fifty or more than 50 of Twitter's top 100 advertisers have pulled back. They are not advertising on the website.

These advertisers have spent almost $2 billion on Twitter ads since 2020 and more than $750 million just in 2022. Yikes.

Add the seven additional clients or advertisers who have slowed their advertising to almost nothing.

Merck & Co., Novartis AG, Chevrolet, Chipotle, Ford, Jeep, Kyndryl have all issued statements regarding their halting or stopping Twitter ads.

Then I add a survey I found of 500 U.S. adults "People," from Pollfish that a little under half of them or 49% agree with the decisions of these big brand advertisers to halt their Twitter ad spending.

It's a tough environment for Musk.

There are plenty of alternatives, under Promotion including

  • Eight (8) major, strategic components or communication elements which are personal and non-personal communication activities.
  • All the activities that communicate the merits of the overall product include:
    • Personal Selling/ Sales Force: Sales persons
      • Listen more than you talk. People who listen more, learn more, plus helps you position your service/product/solution or offering.
    • Advertising: There's an expression "It is only creative if the product or service sells." I wanted to add "It is only good media spending if it sells."
    • Sales Promotion
    • Collateral Materials
    • Direct Marketing (also referred to as Action or Direct Response Advertising)
    • Interactive/Internet/Web, Digital Media, Social Media:
    • Events and Experiences
    • Public Relations/PR
    • With inflation at increasing higher levels, we are seeing brick and mortar retailers needing physical traffic to survive. Gas prices at record levels are keeping customers from driving more. One stop shopping is more important than ever.

I created the 9P's of Marketing.

I own a copyright for the Nine P’s/9 P's of Marketing ©2007 concepts and Marketing practices, which augment the 1960's Marketing Mix (Product, Price, Promotion and Place) or the 4P’s by the American Marketing Association (AMA), Neil Borden and Jerome McCarthy in the study and practice of Marketing.

The Nine P's/9P's of Marketing help identify marketing problems in a number of strategic areas and help develop profitable marketing’s objectives, strategies, tactics and solutions. The 9P's are insightful. They were created for the digital age.

In Marketing, the "customer," or potential consumers should be the center of the universe or "king," but they are missing in the 4P's. I feel from my study and research that there needs to be more focus on the "Customer," or "People." "People" or market segments, which utilize demographics, geographics, psychographics, behavioral characteristics and technographics, are vital, learning components of the 9P's.

I consult and teach using these Marketing concepts and practices of the Nine P's/9P's of Marketing.

In the study and practice of Marketing, brand, advertising and marketing managers develop plans, strategies and tactics. The Nine P’s include these important concepts, practices and components:

  • People (Segmentation and Targeting)
    • In my 9P's, I stress that firms need to look and analyze potential, new, existing and repeat customers and users.
    • It's a special way at looking at diversity, if you review your gender, racial and other factors to your employees, customers, management, talent, board of directors, suppliers, partners, agencies, production and more.
    • To understand your "People" or market segments, you will need to or may need to utilize many characteristics, including demographics (such as age, family size, family life cycle, gender, income, occupation, education, religion, race, culture, generation, nationality, and social class), geographicspsychographics (buyers are on basis of psychological/personality traits, lifecycle, values), behavioral characteristics (needs and benefits, decision roles, user and usage-related variables, occasions, user status, usage rate buyer-readiness stage, loyalty status, attitude and multiple bases) and technographics (potential buyers may or may not have the software and computer skills. Think employees here too, which may be a vital component or components of the 9P's of Marketing.
    • Look at your actual customers. Then once a target market is chosen, the organization can develop its marketing strategies to target a market segment or market segments
    • It’s easy to market toward demographics, but brands can’t connect with people unless they learn how they think. By developing mindset-based marketing strategies, brand decision-making can better resonate with these segments, targets and audiences to increase consumer loyalty.
    • Brand managers need to look at at their customers and/or potential users. Do you understand your potential customer's purchase and usage touchpoints, their habits and how they engage with your brand? Competing for their attention?
    • Place "consumers," "People" or "potential buyers" in the middle of a circle. Find information or data on them. Add the other components in the other nine P's.
    • Post Covid 19 pandemic, I'm seeing "People" want an exceptional buying experience, which includes ethics and the company’s values. People are caring about convenience, comfort, ethics, and sustainability.  Look at home delivery of meals and everything on Amazon and Walmart or Target.
    • “People” or consumers prefer to buy “Products” from brands that share their values and “purpose-driven” movements.
    • Targeting mindsets allows brands to connect with consumers on an emotional level, which positively affects brands’ bottom lines.
    • Consumer and shopping data, plus first-party data can also help brands identify what people find valuable and important. You need to know where they live, how they work and play?
    • "People" or targeting has almost always been left out of the traditional "Marketing Mix," almost every diagram includes the four P's with Product, Promotion, Place and Price.
    • In Marketing, from my education, training, research and analysis plus testimony, there needs to be greater focus on the buyer, "customer," or "People," in both planning ad implementation.
  • Product and Services
    • Under the 9P's, it's the goods and service combination the firm offers to the target market, including variety of product mix, features, branding, designs, packaging, sizes, services, maintenance contracts, warranties and return policies.
    • A product (service) is anything that can be offered to a market for attention, acquisition, use or consumption that might satisfy a want or need.
  • Place (Distribution)
  • Price:
    • I’m finding that “People” or potential customers in my 9P’s, actual consumers are no longer buying “Products” and services based solely on “Price” and product quality.
    • An IBM study found that Nearly six in 10 consumers ("People") surveyed are willing to change their buying habits to reduce environmental impact. They found that over 70% would pay a premium of 35%, on average, for brands and products that are sustainable and environmentally responsible.

Tough For Advertisers To Associate With FIFA And World Cup.

Need a few reasons under "Presentation," in the 9P's of Marketing.

Checkout the Netflix documentary now titled “FIFA Uncovered,” it outlines how corrupt the organization and its sibling or complementary organizations has been.

Also John Oliver's show  "Last Week Tonight with John Oliver" on HBO, last week had a scathing review of the bribes and scandals in the voting for Qatar.

So let's look at the 2022 Qatar World Cup, it is just one of many World Cups that should not have happened, along with Russia and Argentina, and their brutal dictatorships when they were hosted.

First what is "Presentation?" Enabling consumers and “allowing” them to “feel” the brand.

I created the 9P's of Marketing. I look at “real” product and service experiences.

I look at purpose, presentation and branding affecting messaging and buying behaviors.

This “P” or “Presentation” is the act or the purpose of strategically presenting any of the different 9P’s© and/or components to your customers, suppliers, wholesalers, retailers, sales force, marketing intermediaries, clients, employees, partners, and/or others.

They may be symbols or images that represent something; a descriptive or persuasive account (as a salesperson of the product or service).

While traditional marketing is based on target audience impressions/ views/ clicks/ exposure, experimental marketing involves engaging with consumers.

When You Can’t Get Too Much Football And Shopping: Amazon And NFL Come Up With Black Friday Night Football

One year from today. Expect more from Amazon Prime and NFL. It's when you can’t get too much football and shopping.

It's Amazon and the NFL coming up with Black Friday Night Football.

It’s a “new” tradition, for next year. Amazon gets an extra NFL football game for the day after Thanksgiving.

The NFL will play a football game on Black Friday (Day after Thanksgiving, and not a typical day of pro football) for the first time next year, on Amazon Prime, streaming, blending football and holiday sales.

Under Promotion, sponsorships and advertising Amazon has "NFL’s Thursday Night Football" on Prime Video, becoming the first major streaming platform with such a deal.

Another Example Of "Partners, " Under The 9P's Of Marketing. This One Is Electric & Pizzas

Partnerships and teams that feel a connection to the work and the purpose are going to work, speak and promote far more passionately together and to your or their “people,” and with far more influence.

We had Licorice Pizza, how about Electric Pizza?

Domino’s Pizza will be rolling out more than 800+ colorful, custom-branded '23 Chevy Bolt electric vehicles throughout the U.S. It will be the largest electric pizza delivery fleet in the country.

Your next pizza could be delivered by an electric vehicle.

Domino's and Chevy working together.

One of my 9P's is Partners/Strategic Alliances:

Most times Marketers can’t create customer value and build customer relationships only by themselves.

They work closely with partners and alliances outside the firm, and with other company departments (inside partners).

A couple of marketing management tips:
  • Ensure that there is excellent planned and natural alignment of internal and external agencies/partnerships/alliances around common goals and purposes.
  • They should be moving toward shared goals or goals.
  • Continuous support and cooperation with consultation are usually needed.
  • Roles and responsibilities must be clearly communicated, understood and agreed upon.
  • Partnership and cooperative agreements are formed that enable parties to bring their major strengths to the table and emerge with better planning, products, services, promotion, presentation, distribution and ideas than they could produce on their own.

Two Promotional, Sponsorship Nightmares: Crypto, Anyone?

Deals going bad.

Here are two promotional, sponsorship nightmares. Bankruptcy happened. Money is owed and names coming down.

  1. Lasted just 450 days.  Cal's football stadium was named FTX Field at California Memorial Stadium, for $17.5 million. How was the payment made…in crypto. Their deal was planned for ten years.
  2. Lasted 701 days. Miami’s FTX Arena was also for naming rights and it was a 19- year deal, for $135 million. The FTX name was supposed to be affixed to the Heat’s arena until 2040. Just hours after the crypto exchange declared bankruptcy, the company’s logo was being taken down.

  • Planning
  • Promotion:
    • There are eight (8) major, strategic components or communication elements which are personal and non-personal communication activities.
    • The activities that communicate the merits of the overall product include:
  • Partners
  • Presentation:
  • Passion

"Yellowstone," With Five Seasons Of Coors: About Potential Shoppers Or "People," Zipping And Zapping. Solution?

You can't or don't want to zip or zap content. You want as much of Montana, the Dutton family.

Need to avoid advertising in commercial breaks to reach your potential shoppers, or my "people," under the 9P's of Marketing.

As a brand manager, put your ads or promotion inside the content. Pay for product placement.

Off the top of my head it's the fifth season of Molson Coors brand Coors inside "Yellowstone."

And it seems more natural. They haven't properly" placed the labels for the fans.

Better genuine integration or product placement. There's more media than ever but the traditional effects of advertising are eroding. You can't reach your audience like you could decades or years ago.

Predicting Holiday Spending. Just Sayin' "Flat."

If the National Retail Federation predicts holiday spending will grow 6-8% from November to the end of year, then if inflation is at 6-8%, isn't spending or overall sales ---flat.

Just sayin' it's going to be a tougher holiday time for retail if you still add supply chain issues, recession.

There has to be a shift in holiday retail and holiday messaging. Put that under Promotion, under my 9P's

Advertising Rule. Put The Benefit Into The Headline.

I found an ad in the NYT which the account team and planners came up with the strategy and then I remembered David Ogilvy who said in Rule No. 2:

“Every headline should appeal to the reader's self-interest.”

Ogilvy wrote and taught us that headlines provide a benefit to the reader. If the headline doesn't offer a benefit, scrap them.
