Need An Example Of A New Product For Dogs And An Example Of A "Partner," Under The 9P's Of Marketing?

This is way too cute. Targeting dog owners who love donuts or it is donut consumers who have dogs?

Bark if you've heard this one. A dog friendly branded item for sale and obviously getting awareness and buzz

And a great promotion.

What is a strawberry frosted donut topped with extra sprinkles and filled with squeakers?
It's a plush toy and you get it at Dunkin.

For $15, it's a donation; it's the Dunkin' Domutt To-Go, and dog owners can hide treats inside.

Under "partners" Dunkin' and BARK or BarkBox have introduced a product line of co-branded dog toys.

Proceeds go to the Dunkin' Joy in Childhood Foundation. They started last year and are expanding.

I am a senior Forensic Marketing Expert, Advertising expert, Advertising/Marketing consultant with Londre Marketing Consultants, LLC.

I created the 9P's of Marketing.

I own a copyright for the Nine P’s/9 P's of Marketing ©2007 concepts and Marketing practices, which augment the 1960's Marketing Mix (Product, Price, Promotion and Place) or the 4P’s by the American Marketing Association (AMA), Neil Borden and Jerome McCarthy in the study and practice of Marketing.

The Nine P's/9P's of Marketing help identify marketing problems in a number of strategic areas and help develop profitable marketing’s objectives, strategies, tactics and solutions. The 9P's are insightful. They were created for the digital age.

In Marketing, the "customer," or potential consumers should be the center of the universe or "king," but they are missing in the 4P's. I feel from my study and research that there needs to be more focus on the "Customer," or "People." "People" or market segments, which utilize demographics, geographics, psychographics, behavioral characteristics and technographics, are vital, learning components of the 9P's.

I consult and teach using these Marketing concepts and practices of the Nine P's/9P's of Marketing.

In the study and practice of Marketing, brand, advertising and marketing managers develop plans, strategies and tactics. The Nine P’s include these important concepts, practices and components:

  • People (Segmentation and Targeting)
    • In my 9P's, I stress that firms need to look and analyze potential, new, existing and repeat customers and users.
    • It's a special way at looking at diversity, if you review your gender, racial and other factors to your employees, customers, management, talent, board of directors, suppliers, partners, agencies, production and more.
    • To understand your "People" or market segments, you will need to or may need to utilize many characteristics, including demographics (such as age, family size, family life cycle, gender, income, occupation, education, religion, race, culture, generation, nationality, and social class), geographicspsychographics (buyers are on basis of psychological/personality traits, lifecycle, values), behavioral characteristics (needs and benefits, decision roles, user and usage-related variables, occasions, user status, usage rate buyer-readiness stage, loyalty status, attitude and multiple bases) and technographics (potential buyers may or may not have the software and computer skills. Think employees here too, which may be a vital component or components of the 9P's of Marketing.
    • Look at your actual customers. Then once a target market is chosen, the organization can develop its marketing strategies to target a market segment or market segments
    • It’s easy to market toward demographics, but brands can’t connect with people unless they learn how they think. By developing mindset-based marketing strategies, brand decision-making can better resonate with these segments, targets and audiences to increase consumer loyalty.
    • Brand managers need to look at at their customers and/or potential users. Do you understand your potential customer's purchase and usage touchpoints, their habits and how they engage with your brand? Competing for their attention?
    • Place "consumers," "People" or "potential buyers" in the middle of a circle. Find information or data on them. Add the other components in the other nine P's.
    • Post Covid 19 pandemic, I'm seeing "People" want an exceptional buying experience, which includes ethics and the company’s values. People are caring about convenience, comfort, ethics, and sustainability.  Look at home delivery of meals and everything on Amazon and Walmart or Target.
    • “People” or consumers prefer to buy “Products” from brands that share their values and “purpose-driven” movements.
    • Targeting mindsets allows brands to connect with consumers on an emotional level, which positively affects brands’ bottom lines.
    • Consumer and shopping data, plus first-party data can also help brands identify what people find valuable and important. You need to know where they live, how they work and play?
    • "People" or targeting has almost always been left out of the traditional "Marketing Mix," almost every diagram includes the four P's with Product, Promotion, Place and Price.
    • In Marketing, from my education, training, research and analysis plus testimony, there needs to be greater focus on the buyer, "customer," or "People," in both planning ad implementation.
  • Product and Services
    • Under the 9P's, it's the goods and service combination the firm offers to the target market, including variety of product mix, features, branding, designs, packaging, sizes, services, maintenance contracts, warranties and return policies.
    • A product (service) is anything that can be offered to a market for attention, acquisition, use or consumption that might satisfy a want or need.
  • Place (Distribution)
  • Price:
    • I’m finding that “People” or potential customers in my 9P’s, actual consumers are no longer buying “Products” and services based solely on “Price” and product quality.
    • An IBM study found that Nearly six in 10 consumers ("People") surveyed are willing to change their buying habits to reduce environmental impact. They found that over 70% would pay a premium of 35%, on average, for brands and products that are sustainable and environmentally responsible.
  • Planning
  • Promotion:
    • There are eight (8) major, strategic components or communication elements which are personal and non-personal communication activities.
    • The activities that communicate the merits of the overall product include:
      • Personal Selling/ Sales Force: Sales persons
        • Listen more than you talk. People who listen more, learn more, plus helps you position your service/product/solution or offering.
      • Advertising: There's an expression "It is only creative if the product or service sells." I wanted to add "It is only good media spending if it sells."
      • Sales Promotion
      • Collateral Materials
      • Direct Marketing (also referred to as Action or Direct Response Advertising)
      • Interactive/Internet/Web, Digital Media, Social Media:
      • Events and Experiences
      • Public Relations/PR
    • Here are some strategic comments and questions under Promotion:
      • To whom should you target and promote? Under "People"/Targeting, target market, audience with media characteristics fall here.
      • What should you promote? Strategic copy points.
      • Evaluate the eight different elements under Promotion and your brand's practices. That affects media planning.
      • Ask is there a better way? A different promotional mix. There has to be a better way.
      • What are your costs in dollars and manpower or person power? Ask "Is there a different way or ways to budget?"
      • Look at different strategic partners? Their costs?
      • You can differentiate with price. Discounting? Special sales? What economic and discount levels should you offer? Look at revenue versus costs.
      • What form or combination of promotion should you offer? Features?
      • How frequent? Add media planning here.

Marketing Isn't Just Advertising. Promotion Has How Many Elements Or Factors?

Under the nine P's of Marketing, one of the components is "Promotion" and it has eight elements or parts. Only one of them is advertising.

In my nine P's, "Promotion" has eight (8) major, strategic components:

Promotion is the personal and nonpersonal communication of Marketing or the overall communication element between the seller and potential buyer.

While the aim of promotion is to increase awareness, create interest, generate sales or create brand loyalty, "Promotion" refers to any type of marketing-related communication used to inform or persuade target markets/media audiences of the relative merits of a product, service, brand or issue.

A promotional activity will support or provide an active encouragement for the furtherance of a cause, venture, or aim.

Activities that communicate the merits of the overall product, which include:

Personal Selling/ Sales Force: Personal selling is the face-to-face interaction of a seller or sales force person/representative with a potential buyer where the seller tries to persuade the buyer to purchase the product or service they are promoting on behalf of a company or firm.

Sales people are accustomed to rejection, but they should be able to absorb it, analyze it and take actions to improve the overall product or service presentation.

From Barbara Corcoran’s book, Shark Tales and from appearances on ABC’s Shark Tank: “Good salesmanship is never anything more than playing up the positives and minimizing the negatives, and if you can find a unique gimmick, it will give you a huge leg up over your competitors.”

Scott McKain from “Creating Distinction” said: “Sales people do not think like sales people when they are shopping. They think like customers.”

Advertising--Mass or nonpersonal selling: TV, radio, magazines, newspaper, outdoor/out-of-home (OOH), online, mobile, digital.

Advertising is structured and composed of nonpersonal communication of information, usually paid for and usually persuasive in nature, about products (goods, services) and ideas by identified sponsors through various media. (Contemporary Advertising, 15e, Arens, Weigold, 2017; Advertising 2E, Arens, Schafer, Weigold, 2015)

Sales Promotion--Promotional tools, both a tool to speed up sales or value for the company; or an extra incentive to buy, a value to the customer. Includes trade deals, trade incentives, rebates, money-back offers, frequency programs, slotting allowances for in store promotion, samples or sampling, loyalty programs, coupons, premiums, tie-ins, p-o-p, displays, pop-ups, sweepstakes, allowances, trade shows, sales rep/trade contests, events/experiences and more.

Collateral Materials--Booklets, brochures, catalogs, films, sales kits, media kits, promotional products and annual reports.

Direct Marketing (also referred to as Action or Direct Response Advertising) --online, direct mail, mobile, database management, catalogs, telemarketing, and direct-response ads, including TV.

Interactive/Internet/Web, Digital Media, Social Media – Interactive/online is a form that uses the Internet and Web to deliver promotional messages to attract customers. Social media is an interactive platform in which individuals and communities create and share user-generated content. Social media is ubiquitously accessible, includes Facebook, YouTube, LinkedIn, Snapchat, Twitter, as examples. Add web analytics tools, email marketing, search marketing, SEO (Search Engine Optimization).

Events and Experiences--Interacting with the brand. An experience can be much more impactful than an exposure or an impression. Events, promotions, pop-ups, one on one, influencer marketing, and/or face-to-face engagements are delivering consumers to encounter, “experience,” and interact with the product or the service, usually prior to buying. Also known as “experiential promotion and/or marketing.”

Public Relations--press releases, publicity. Securing editorial space, as opposed to paid space--usually in print, electronic or Internet media.  Promote or “hype” a product, service, idea, place, person or organization, internal communication, lobbying. PR involves a variety of programs designed to promote or protect a company’s image/reputation or individual products.

It's Early But What Is Wrong With The Olympics? Here Are Nine Reasons...

What Is Wrong With The Olympics? Here are a few reasons; I'll give you nine.
  1. Lack of support and uninterest of Japanese People as host country.
  2. Lack of live fans in the stands in Japan.
  3. Advertisers are worried; they invested $1.2 billion in the sports extravaganza.
  4. TV viewing is down and advertisers are not getting the impact that they want.
  5. Weak reasons to watch the opening night ceremonies. Nielsen said that viewership for opening ceremonies came in at 17 million viewers, which was a 36% decline from the TV audience for the 2016 broadcast of the Summer Games in Rio.
  6. Covid and Japan have been the storyline more that the individual athletes.
  7. Way too much promotion for NBC. The Games were delayed a year.
  8. While viewers can watch at any time, it’s like a smorgasbord. No set time for the good stuff.
  9. Two stars are out: Simon Biles pulled out and Naomi Osaka lost.
  10. TV viewership is down since there is early-morning availability of sports coverage via streaming.
  11. Ultimately, 29 athletes tested positive for Covid and were not able to compete.
But wait there are many more nights of the Games and the streaming numbers across NBCU’s digital venues has been good.

Three Post Covid-19 Marketing Observations Under Promotion And Specifically On One Of Its Eight Components: Personal Selling

Under "Promotion," one of the 9P's of Marketing it contains eight major, strategic components or communication elements which are personal and non-personal communication activities.

I usually list Personal selling or your sales force as the first them.

What is Promotion?  It's the activities that communicate the merits of the overall product. Promotion includes:

      • Personal Selling/ Sales Force: Sales persons
      • Advertising: There's an expression "It is only creative if the product or service sells." I wanted to add "It is only good media spending if it sells."
      • Sales Promotion
      • Collateral Materials
      • Direct Marketing (also referred to as Action or Direct Response Advertising)
      • Interactive/Internet/Web, Digital Media, Social Media:
      • Events and Experiences
      • Public Relations/PR

My three observations:

  1. For sales people, listen more than you talk. People who listen more, learn more, plus helps you position your service/product/solution or offering to the potential buyer ("People").
  2. Senior sales people are saying that not being physically present with your or their team has made it harder to observe, teach and  and coach.
  3. With Zoom, we are seeing a hybrid model, and it is possible to thrive in a remote world.

  • Promotion:

New Versus Used Car? What To Buy?

New cars cost more. Always have.

There's dealer mark up. The car is shiny and new.

A new car or vehicle costs on average $39K.

A used vehicle is on average nearly $28K. Which one has the bigger jump in price?  Used cars are up an average of 24%n from last June 2020.

"People" or potential car buyers are needing to compromise.

Prices are high.  It depends on make and model but both new and used cars are surging in "price."

New car inventory is low since there's a chip shortage.

Fewer cars and less inventory.

What More Throwback Jerseys? What Do These Throwback Jerseys, One Helmet or Two And July 31st Have in Common?

We will see more classic throwback NFL jerseys in 2022 and 2023. And the July 31st is the date the teams need to report back to the NFL if they want to use a second helmet in '22.

Helmets add another element to branding and "presentation," under the 9P's of Marketing.

We may see more additions and changes:
  • Eagles (From midnight green to something like kelly green)
  • Cowboys (From silver to white)
  • Seahawks (From blue helmet to silver
  • Buccaneers = Creamsicle
  • Falcons (From black helmet to red)
While you feel you’ve seen a lot, a few teams have been holding back on throwback uniforms since the NFL has a one helmet rule and the colors of the helmets do not match the jersey colors of the past. That is for sure with the Patriots, Buccaneers and the Eagles.

But coming in ’22 you see more uniforms and the teams need to make their decisions on the two helmet rule by July 31st.

What May Be The Most Important, Insightful Part Of Branding, Creative And Media Spending, Under "Presentation" In The 9P's?

Suppliers and partners (internal and externally), another of the 9P's, are looking to find examples to reach and deliver diverse audiences.

I will give you two words. Diversity and Inclusion.

Targeting media.

Brands are looking for examples of inclusion, which are also representative of their brand customer bases ("People") with content, media buys and they are looking to meet their goals of diversity, equity and inclusion. Many may have been developed last year after the George Floyd demonstrations.

Companies and media buyers are shifting their ad spending to minority-owned media projects, outlets and programing.

Look at accountability and transparency:

Look at the employees, management, talent, creative/ads, suppliers, agencies, partners and comparing the numbers and percentages to the gender and racial makeups.

As Inflation Hits, It Affects Some Retailer's Products More Than Others? Dollar Stores, An Example With 9P's Of Marketing?

We've been living in an environment of low inflation until Covid-19 and the coming out of the pandemic. Now the economy and prices are heating up.

Think Dollar Tree. Its "people," potential and actual customers want "product" which is well, a dollar. They are looking for deals.

They have been finding "product" at around 43 cents each and to sell for a buck they have found to be more difficult.

Transportation costs are up.

Employee costs for both part-time and full-time are pushing up and raw material costs are up. So labor and costs are making it difficult to find $1 products and make sales revenue goals and a profit. .

Their "Place" is mostly suburb stores with middle-class incomes. These "People" and shoppers like to browse and find bargains

Dollar Tree and Family Dollar have about 16K stores. Family Dollar sells at multiple dollar points so it doesn't have the problem of finding product but need to control the rising costs of labor and product.

One solution is to develop and create a combo store with $1 items and with $3, $4 and $5 items It's all under one roof.
