Blending A Bad Partner, Promotion And Celebrity Without An Endorsement. Not A Good Idea.

Obviously it is more than a cake.

Bad, illegal promotion.

Here's the story with a few examples of the 9P's or how not to promote. You need to get an approval. A legal approval.

Every winter at the holidays, Tom Cruise sends out a Coconut cake to his favorite Hollywood people.

The cake comes from Doan’s Bakery. They use the copy for their "Promotion" of its cake on their profile page as “the personal favorite of one famous actor.”

Goldbelly, the specialty food delivery service, but sometimes or all of the time is over-priced, may have gone too far.Way too far.

They included a photo of Tom Cruise to promote the famous Doan’s Bakery bundt cake.

I created the 9P's of Marketing--Planning, People, Product, Place, Price, Promotion, Partners, Passion and Presentation to solve Marketing and business problems and create Marketing opportunities

In early 2025, I have used plenty of examples of the 9P’s of Marketing to explain the different components of Marketing in three classrooms, Loyola Law School and Pepperdine. Added blog posts, too. And a podcast.

Marketing is not only advertising or PR. Marketing is not only PR, they are just two of the eight components under Promotion with my 9P's.

My 9P's of Marketing
do include include these important concepts, practices and components:

  • Planning and Research. From the founder of Intuit, Scott Cook, said: " A brand is no longer what we tell the consumer it is -- (maybe from Marketing Research never was is my comment) it is what consumers (“People” in the 9P’s) tell each other it is.
  • People (Segmentation and Targeting)
    • In my 9P's, I stress that firms need to look and analyze potential, new, existing and repeat customers and users. As in weight loss medicines
  • Product and Services
  • Place (Distribution) Goldbelly is a distribution company of specialty items.
  • Price or Pricing, Goldbelly is a distribution company of specialty items, and you will pay for these specialty items shipped to your home of office. Or as a gift. .
  • Promotion
    • There are eight (8) major, strategic components or communication elements which are personal and non-personal communication activities.
    • The activities that communicate the merits of the overall product include:
      • Personal Selling/ Sales Force: Sales persons
        • Listen more than you talk. People who listen more, learn more, plus helps you position your service/product/solution or offering.
      • Advertising:
      • Like Super Bowl advertising in February for Super Bowl. Think about this expression "It is only creative if the product or service sells." I wanted to add "It is only good media spending if it sells."
      • Sales Promotion
      • Collateral Materials
      • Direct Marketing (also referred to as Action or Direct Response Advertising)
      • Interactive/Internet/Web, Digital Media, Social Media:
      • Events and Experiences, sampling
      • Public Relations/PR
    • One stop shopping is more important than ever.
  • Partners/Alliances: Most times Marketers can’t create customer value and build customer relationships only by themselves. They work closely with partners and alliances outside the firm, and with other company departments (inside partners).

Partnerships and teams that feel a connection to the work and the purpose are going to speak far more passionately together and to your or their “people,” and with far more influence.

A partnership; the joint relationships, partnerships and strategic alliances: The relationship existing between two parties; a relationship resembling a legal partnership and usually involving close cooperation between parties having specific and joint rights and responsibilities as a common enterprise. Usually plural or “Partners,” not Partner.

Ensure that there is excellent planned and natural alignment of internal and                            external agencies/partnerships/alliances around common goals and purposes.
They should be moving toward shared goals or goals.

  • Presentation:
    • The act or acts of strategically presenting any of the different 9P’s© and/or components to your customers, suppliers, wholesalers, retailers, sales force, marketing intermediaries, clients, employees, partners, and/or others.

Presentation aspects may be signs, symbols or images that represent something; a descriptive or persuasive account (as a sales person of the product or service). Something set forth for the attention of mind of your targets ("People") and media audiences. I've added "culture," too. I'm adding "culture," too.

  • Passion, including consumers and employees. Think about the lines sometimes of consumers waiting for a new Apple product

Beer. Timely. Politics. The 9P's Of Marketing. Clever, Moosehead Lager.

Canada and USA. Marketing. Current events.

Clever, Moosehead. Timely.

Politics and Marketing don't always mix, but a brewery, founded in 1867, has introduced how to get thru the next four years. I could do a lecture on this using my 9P's of Marketing.... Product, Promotion, Presentation, Place, Price to start. 1461 beers or lagers, a beer a day, for four years. I could add tariffs to the lecture too.

I created the 9P's of Marketing--Planning, People, Product, Place, Price, Promotion, Partners, Passion and Presentation to solve Marketing and business problems and create Marketing opportunities

Another Way Of Looking At "Presentation," Under The 9P's Of Marketing.

I define "Presentation," in my 9P's of Marketing as: The act or acts of strategically presenting any of the different 9P’s of Marketing© and/or components to your customers, suppliers, wholesalers, retailers, sales force, marketing intermediaries, clients, employees, partners, and/or others.

Presentation is branding. Its aspects may be signs, symbols or images that represent something; a descriptive or persuasive account (as a sales person of the product or service). Something set forth for the attention of mind of your targets ("People") and media audiences.

I'm adding a company's "culture."

There is this thing called "culture" that almost seems undefinable that has an impact on how people are behaving and performing.

Under Presentation, “culture” is a set of collective core values that guide an organization’s mission, priorities, including Marketing decision-making.

It’s the shared assumptions or beliefs about what matters, what works and who matters that shapes behavior.

I've found that effective organization have three pillars:

  1. A clear value proposition that states why the organization exists and what its purpose is.
  2. With training programs and equipment, a system to carry out that purpose.
  3. It’s difficult but having a defined culture. It’s that culture which allows the company and its employees to deliver on that value proposition.

Here’s a few core values: Build around shared values, competition, joy, excitement, structure, authenticity, compassion and mindfulness.

I have found that there are people that fit the culture and there are people that come in and add to the culture, and those are two distinctions.

For example: at Netflix they do not want “brilliant jerks.” A brilliant jerk is a term used to define a person who is great at their craft but painful to work with. While a brilliant jerk may deliver great results for a company – they are a pain to work with. Especially on team assignments.

A person whose individual performance looks very strong, but the way they behave toward others, essentially harms others abilities to do their best work,

And when your employees feel those values and authenticity coming from management, it comes alive the marketplace. It's in the atmosphere, something real and the momentum starts to build in customer retention and satisfaction.

Looking Back On Airline Product/Services, People/Men Only and Promotion. With My 9P's Of Marketing

I have confirmed this.

Men Only Flights. On United Airlines.

How times have changed.

Looking at Product, Pricing, Promotion, Presentation, People and more under my Nine P's of Marketing.

From '53 to '70, United Airlines scheduled and promoted six-day-a-week afternoon non-stop with an extra fare "Men Only" flights between New York and Chicago ("The Chicago Executive" 642–643) and between Los Angeles and San Francisco (665–666) on which women and children were banned.

When A Product Isn't A Product. Here's An Example. Compounded Semaglutide Versus Wegovy, With Compounding Pharmacies

Another Powerpoint slide? For sure.

It started with the copy point "not FDA approved," and caught my eye to add it to a school presentation at Loyola Law School.

First it was Ozempic.

Now another "People" magazine ad for Wegovy. Using my 9P's of Marketing. "People," "Place," Product," "Partners," "Promotion" and "Presentation."

Compounding pharmacies falls under "Place."

Branded products may be different. Here's an example. Compounded Semaglutide versus Novo Nordisk's Wegovy.

It appears FDA approved is a strong copy point. We are talking product quality too. Or they are with their "Do you know what you're injecting into your body?" headline and  "Promotion."

Saw a tv spot in the Oscars.

Read an ad in "People."

When a product isn't a Product.

Wegovy and Novo Nordisk introduced an advertising campaign with
"Do you know what you're injecting into your body?" headline to highlight the risks of unproven medications, such as compounded semaglutide and other weight-loss drugs.

So what? There are reasons.

According to a simple search on Google, while both compounded semaglutide and Ozempic contain the same active ingredient (semaglutide), the key difference is that Ozempic (didn't include Wegovy) is an FDA-approved brand name medication, while compounded semaglutide is a custom-made version prepared by a compounding pharmacy.

The ad and promotion continue with "it hasn't undergone the same rigorous testing and may not be as standardized in terms of quality and dosage, potentially posing safety concerns; compounded semaglutide may also be cheaper but could vary in formulation depending on the pharmacy making it."

Add "People" too.

  • Place (Distribution) Pharmacies are different.
  • Price or Pricing

      • Advertising:
      • Like Super Bowl advertising in February for Super Bowl. Think about this expression "It is only creative if the product or service sells." I wanted to add "It is only good media spending if it sells."
      • Sales Promotion
      • Collateral Materials

In the cruise industry will Trump’s Tariffs affect it. Of course.

Are cruises a value? As prices go up.

Under Product, they have cruising with Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, Silversea and entering river cruising.
