Under “Place,” And “Promotion,” In The 9P’s Of Marketing, Why Is Venice Important To Movies?

Why is Venice important to the movies? Because films are introduced and premiered there. They are promoted there. They are starting the ramp to awareness. 

Venice kicks off the movie awards season with the Venice Film Festival. Academy Awards on March 27th. In the past we’ve seen “The Shape of Water” and “Nomadland” win in Venice and Best Picture at Oscars.

This year the Lido in Venice will lead with “Power of Dog” from Netflix, “Dune” from Warner Bros. and “Parallel Mothers” from Sony Pictures Classics

We’re seeing more competition and selections from European and the independent circuit. More “audience-friendly” and non-traditional awards contenders.  More debuts at the Lido in Venice.

But don’t for get the premieres and focus on the film festivals in Telluride, Toronto and New York.

  • People (Segmentation and Targeting)
    • In my 9P's, I stress that firms need to look and analyze potential, new, existing and repeat customers and users. Movie goers? Movie watchers? 
    • To understand your "People" or market segments, you will need to or may need to utilize many characteristics, including demographics (such as age, family size, family life cycle, gender, income, occupation, education, religion, race, culture, generation, nationality, and social class), geographicspsychographics (buyers are on basis of psychological/personality traits, lifecycle, values), behavioral characteristics (needs and benefits, decision roles, user and usage-related variables, occasions, user status, usage rate buyer-readiness stage, loyalty status, attitude and multiple bases) and technographics (potential buyers may or may not have the software and computer skills. Think employees here too, which may be a vital component or components of the 9P's of Marketing. 
    • Once a target market is chosen, the organization can develop its marketing strategies to target a market segment or market segments
    • It’s easy to market toward demographics, but brands can’t connect with people unless they learn how they think. By developing mindset-based marketing strategies, brand decision-making can better resonate with these segments, targets and audiences to increase consumer loyalty.
    • Brand managers need to look at at their customers and/or potential users. Do you understand your potential customer's purchase and usage touchpoints, their habits and how they engage with your brand? Competing for their attention? 
    • Place "consumers," "People" or "potential buyers" in the middle of a circle. Find information or data on them. Add the other components in the other nine P's.
    • Post Covid 19 pandemic, I'm seeing "People" want an exceptional buying experience, which includes ethics and the company’s values. People are caring about convenience, comfort, ethics, and sustainability.  Look at home delivery of meals and everything on Amazon and Walmart or Target.
    • “People” or consumers prefer to buy “Products” from brands that share their values and “purpose-driven” movements.
    • Targeting mindsets allows brands to connect with consumers on an emotional level, which positively affects brands’ bottom lines.
    • Consumer and shopping data, plus first-party data can also help brands identify what people find valuable and important. You need to know where they live, how they work and play?
    • "People" or targeting has almost always been left out of the traditional "Marketing Mix," almost every diagram includes the four P's with Product, Promotion, Place and Price.
    • In Marketing, from my education, training, research and analysis plus testimony, there needs to be greater focus on the buyer, "customer," or "People," in both planning ad implementation.
  • Product and Services
    • Movies? Under the 9P's, it's the goods and service combination the firm offers to the target market, including variety of product mix, features, branding, designs, packaging, sizes, services, maintenance contracts, warranties and return policies.
    • A product (service) is anything that can be offered to a market for attention, acquisition, use or consumption that might satisfy a want or need.
  • Place (Distribution): Plenty of ways to see a movie. Streaming at home? On a plane? On your phone? 
  • Price: 
    • I’m finding that “People” or potential customers in my 9P’s, actual consumers are no longer buying “Products” and services based solely on “Price” and product quality.
  • Planning
  • Promotion: 
    • There are eight (8) major, strategic components or communication elements which are personal and non-personal communication activities. 
    • The activities that communicate the merits of the overall product include:
      • Personal Selling/ Sales Force: Sales persons
        • Listen more than you talk. People who listen more, learn more, plus helps you position your service/product/solution or offering. 
      • Advertising: There's an expression "It is only creative if the product or service sells." I wanted to add "It is only good media spending if it sells." 
      • Sales Promotion
      • Collateral Materials
      • Direct Marketing (also referred to as Action or Direct Response Advertising)
      • Interactive/Internet/Web, Digital Media, Social Media:  
      • Events and Experiences
      • Public Relations/PR
    • Here are some strategic comments and questions under Promotion:
      • To whom should you target and promote? Movie watchers? Think timing too. Under "People"/Targeting, target market, audience with media characteristics fall here.
      • What should you promote? Strategic copy points.
      • Evaluate the eight different elements under Promotion and your brand's practices. That affects media planning.
      • Ask is there a better way? A different promotional mix. There has to be a better way. 
      • What are your costs in dollars and manpower or person power? Ask "Is there a different way or ways to budget?" 
      • Look at different strategic partners? Their costs?
      • You can differentiate with price. Discounting? Special sales? What economic and discount levels should you offer? Look at revenue versus costs. 
      • What form or combination of promotion should you offer? Features?
      • How frequent? Add media planning here.

NBA Branding? For 37 Or 38 Years Was The Basketball Used On NBA Courts And Arenas A Spalding Ball Or Wilson Ball?

Plenty of branding issues. Tough question? It's a core piece of equipment on the courts. 

It's about "product, branding and promotion. What is a brand? It's a type of product manufactured by a particular company under a particular name. Spaulding? Wilson? 

It was a Spaulding basketball versus Wilson. Wilson is taking over after 37 or 38 years.  

Who produces the footballs in the NFL? Wilson owns that core peice of business in the NFL and now the NBA. 

For the NBA Wilson it is estimated to cost betwen $25 Million and $35 Million, for this branding plug and promotional characteristic. 

It's not just for NBA and for the WNBA and the G League. 

Technically, Wilson isn't Wilson, it's part Amer Sports which is part of the largest sportswear brand in China and it's part of ANTA Sports.

Want To Reach Younger Consumers? But Who Buys Cereal? Who Are The Users Compared To The Buyers Or "People" Under Nine P's?

You're the brand manager and want to reach consumers or different "people" to increase awareness and deliver sales of your brand.

Today's example is General Mills cereal brand Lucky Charms.

They released, working with "partner" Anomaly, the Magically Deliciouseight-song album last week titled.  It is promoted on Instagram with a promotional poll and on Spotify. 

Why eight? Eight is for each of the marshmallow charms. Using digital to reach "new" users and consumers or "people," under my 9P's.

Think Of Dollar Stores In A Different Way?

Adding eyecare and healthcare? Who knew? 

They are called "dollar stores" because they in the early stages sold "product," for a buck. Think Dollar Tree, 99 Cents Stores, Family Dollars, Dollar General and others.

Surprisingly they have higher gross margins than supermarkets and discount stores. They can make more money on each sale. 

If you are looking at rural America ("Place") there are some services which the consumers and neighborhoods need. That's where Dollar Tree comes in. They are exploring adding healthcare.

Interesting Partners, Place And People With Returnable Cups And The 9P's Of Marketing?

It takes a leap of faith.And a supply chain with the customers at the end and in the beginning. Real channels of distribution and more. 

It's about a sustainability message. I'd add brand "presentation," too in the company's communication. 

Are "people" (consumers and potential customers to actual customers) willing to return reuseable, sturdier packaging. Like cups and bowls or containers to fast food joints? 

The fast food companies are testing them. Seeing is their "people" are willing to change the system. The process comes with a price, another of the 9P's. It's a tougher time with Covid, but Burger King, McDonalds and Hortons are testing returnable fast-food cups, where "people"/customers pay extra (it's a deposit) and return the cup or cups. Recycling.

There are companies ("Partners" with fast food operators) which provide this service and the customers need to drop off the item ir items. 

The items are coffee cups, drink cups and returnable containers. We even have seen stainless steel bowls at ice cream places.

Example? Promotion, Product Offerings, Airlines And Black-Owned And Women-Owned Businesses

For an airline, my example includes examples under Product, Presentation and Promotion, under the 9P's of Marketing..

Plenty of branding involved.

Delta is promoting their product offerings of alcohol from women-owned and black-owned brands.

To their flights, some domestic and some international, Delta is adding products such as Breckenridge Brewery's Cookie Porter Beer, spiked seltzer, wine, classic cocktails and more. One of the wine products is a rose from a woman-owned winery. Every bottle of rose is made by a woman. Interesting what part of the planting, trimming growning and harvesting was done by women or men?

Delta is offering for sale the Du Nord Foundation vodka, from the first Black-owned distillery in the U.S.

It’s October, so Delta will donate 20% of all onboard purchases to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. 

Here are some strategic comments and questions under Promotion:
    • To whom should you target and promote? Under "People"/Targeting, target market, audience with media characteristics fall here.
    • What should you promote? Strategic copy points. In this example product offerings in October with contributions and woman- and black-owned companies.

  • People (Segmentation and Targeting)
    • In my 9P's, I stress that firms need to look and analyze potential, new, existing and repeat customers and users. 
    • To understand your "People" or market segments, you will need to or may need to utilize many characteristics, including demographics (such as age, family size, family life cycle, gender, income, occupation, education, religion, race, culture, generation, nationality, and social class), geographicspsychographics (buyers are on basis of psychological/personality traits, lifecycle, values), behavioral characteristics (needs and benefits, decision roles, user and usage-related variables, occasions, user status, usage rate buyer-readiness stage, loyalty status, attitude and multiple bases) and technographics (potential buyers may or may not have the software and computer skills. Think employees here too, which may be a vital component or components of the 9P's of Marketing. 
    • Once a target market is chosen, the organization can develop its marketing strategies to target a market segment or market segments
    • It’s easy to market toward demographics, but brands can’t connect with people unless they learn how they think. By developing mindset-based marketing strategies, brand decision-making can better resonate with these segments, targets and audiences to increase consumer loyalty.
    • Brand managers need to look at at their customers and/or potential users. Do you understand your potential customer's purchase and usage touchpoints, their habits and how they engage with your brand? Competing for their attention? 
    • Place "consumers," "People" or "potential buyers" in the middle of a circle. Find information or data on them. Add the other components in the other nine P's.
    • Post Covid 19 pandemic, I'm seeing "People" want an exceptional buying experience, which includes ethics and the company’s values. People are caring about convenience, comfort, ethics, and sustainability.  Look at home delivery of meals and everything on Amazon and Walmart or Target.
    • “People” or consumers prefer to buy “Products” from brands that share their values and “purpose-driven” movements.
    • Targeting mindsets allows brands to connect with consumers on an emotional level, which positively affects brands’ bottom lines.
    • Consumer and shopping data, plus first-party data can also help brands identify what people find valuable and important. You need to know where they live, how they work and play?
    • "People" or targeting has almost always been left out of the traditional "Marketing Mix," almost every diagram includes the four P's with Product, Promotion, Place and Price.
    • In Marketing, from my education, training, research and analysis plus testimony, there needs to be greater focus on the buyer, "customer," or "People," in both planning ad implementation.
  • Product and Services
    • Airlines are a product. 
    • Under the 9P's, it's the goods and service combination the firm offers to the target market, including variety of product mix, features, branding, designs, packaging, sizes, services, maintenance contracts, warranties and return policies.
    • A product (service) is anything that can be offered to a market for attention, acquisition, use or consumption that might satisfy a want or need.
  • Place (Distribution)
  • Price: 
    • I’m finding that “People” or potential customers in my 9P’s, actual consumers are no longer buying “Products” and services based solely on “Price” and product quality.
    • An IBM study found that Nearly six in 10 consumers ("People") surveyed are willing to change their buying habits to reduce environmental impact. They found that over 70% would pay a premium of 35%, on average, for brands and products that are sustainable and environmentally responsible.
  • Planning
  • Promotion: 
    • There are eight (8) major, strategic components or communication elements which are personal and non-personal communication activities. 
    • The activities that communicate the merits of the overall product include:
      • Personal Selling/ Sales Force: Sales persons
        • Listen more than you talk. People who listen more, learn more, plus helps you position your service/product/solution or offering. 
      • Advertising: There's an expression "It is only creative if the product or service sells." I wanted to add "It is only good media spending if it sells." 
      • Sales Promotion
      • Collateral Materials
      • Direct Marketing (also referred to as Action or Direct Response Advertising)
      • Interactive/Internet/Web, Digital Media, Social Media:  
      • Events and Experiences

  • Presentation: “Presentation” is the act of strategically presenting any of the different 9P’s© and/or components to your customers, suppliers, wholesalers, retailers, sales force, marketing intermediaries, clients, employees, partners, and/or others.  They may be symbols or images that represent something; a descriptive or persuasive account (as a sales person of the product or service). Something set forth for the attention of mind.
    o   While traditional marketing is based on target audience impressions/ views/ clicks/ exposure, experimental marketing involves engaging with consumers. Enabling consumers and “allowing” them to “feel” the brand.

#3: College debate, with college students from Clemson and Georgia, Duh. on is it a taco or sandwich?

Amazon Versus Macy’s: I Bring This To You As News. Will Use In My Marketing Presentations To Law Schools

White star v. The Smile?

The big white star: Macy’s sign on an adjacent building in Herald Square in New York could be replaced with the Amazon smile. 

They are battling in court. 

Could the signage be rented to a competitor? To me this isn’t about sales but about being a compeitior, about promotion and advertising.

Macy's v. Amazon.

The sign is about promotion, media and more. It's territorial with covenants. And from the court filings and papers, Amazon is mentioned as a "conquering enemy."

Macy’s has had the sign up since the 60’s.  It’s a 2200 sq feet sign.

Retail v. retail but not really online versus online.  

Macy’s has filed an injunction.

Remember this is Macy’s New York City flagship  store and hosts the televised Thanksgiving Day parade. Will make it more difficult for NBC.Part of the fight is that Macy’s is argiuing in court that there is a "restrictive covenant" from ’63 against any agreement (read Amazon or any large retail competitor of Macy;’s  to advertise on the huge sign.

One more point: Macy’s lost partial control when they sold the building and was renting or leasing the promotional signage.

Coming 4th Quarter? Where Do You Place Raw Material And Inventory Shortages, Under The 9P's Of Marketing?

"Product" and "Place," under the 9P's

Starting now and for the 4th quarter, we'll be seeing how retailers are planning to stock up for holiday sales. This will be especially true with retailers who have been struggling to maintain their product inventories due to pandemic buying, shortages in chips, shortfalls on raw material availability and we've seen lack of inventories. 

Add to that the port and shipping operation bottlenecks. i have a shipping  client who is reporting to its customers the shortages of equipment at ports.

Don't Bite The Hand That Feeds You...Two References Of Players Versus Fans In New York?

Not a lot of loving hand gestures here. 

Remember four years ago Mr. Met the mascot gave a middle finger to the fans.

Hand signals are used on the base paths for the players. Now the players are using negative hand signals against the fans who pay them. Oh, the fans are booing them for not being disciplined and not performing. 

One of the Mets players signed for a $341 million dollar contract extension.

No matter how you want to paint these boos do not give the million dollar players the right or the reason to give bad hand signals. 

The best teams and the best players have discipline. But how about those Mets? They are giving fingers down as in "Go to Hell."
