Simple Question. Complex Answer In My Van Lang Marketing Presentation To Students In Vietnam.

I was asked, in my Marketing Presentation "Londre’s Insights Into Our Global Marketplaces, with Business Experiences and the 9P’s of Marketing©2007"  at Van Lang University last week.

What do you want from PR?

I’d add from Promotion, with eight (8) elements or parts and components.

You want increases in awareness, clicks, inbound links, brand lift, website traffic, potential and actual customers. Ultimately sales.

I am an experienced, senior Forensic Marketing Expert, Advertising expert, Advertising/Marketing consultant with Londre Marketing Consultants, LLC.

I created the 9P's of Marketing--Planning, People, Product, Place, Price, Promotion, Partners, Passion and Presentation to solve Marketing and business problems and create Marketing opportunities

I own a copyright for these Nine P’s/9 P's of Marketing©2007 concepts and Marketing practices, which augment the 1960's Marketing Mix (Product, Price, Promotion and Place) or the 4P’s by the American Marketing Association (AMA), Neil Borden and Jerome McCarthy in the study and practice of Marketing. It's sixty years later and we are in the digital age.

The Nine P's/9P's of Marketing help identify marketing problems in a number of strategic areas and help develop profitable marketing’s objectives, strategies, tactics and solutions. The 9P's are insightful. The nine P's were created for the digital age.

I consult and teach using these Marketing concepts and practices of the Nine P's/9P's of Marketing.

In the study and practice of Marketing, brand, advertising and marketing managers develop plans, strategies and tactics. The Nine P’s include these important concepts, practices and components:

  • People (Segmentation and Targeting)
    • In my 9P's, I stress that firms need to look and analyze potential, new, existing and repeat customers and users.
  • Product and Services
  • Place (Distribution)
  • Price or Pricing
  • Planning
  • Promotion:
    • There are eight (8) major, strategic components or communication elements which are personal and non-personal communication activities.
    • The activities that communicate the merits of the overall product include:
      • Personal Selling/ Sales Force: Sales persons
        • Listen more than you talk. People who listen more, learn more, plus helps you position your service/product/solution or offering.
      • Advertising: You may not know that Google, Facebook and Amazon attract 46 cents of every dollar spent by advertisers. Think about this expression "It is only creative if the product or service sells." I wanted to add "It is only good media spending if it sells."
      • Sales Promotion
      • Collateral Materials
      • Direct Marketing (also referred to as Action or Direct Response Advertising)
      • Interactive/Internet/Web, Digital Media, Social Media:
      • Events and Experiences
      • Public Relations/PR
    • With inflation at increasing higher levels, we are seeing brick and mortar retailers needing physical traffic to survive. Gas prices at record levels are keeping customers from driving more. One stop shopping is more important than ever.
  • Partners/Alliances
  • Presentation:
    • The act or acts of strategically presenting any of the different 9P’s© and/or components to your customers, suppliers, wholesalers, retailers, sales force, marketing intermediaries, clients, employees, partners, and/or others.

Presentation aspects may be signs, symbols or images that represent something; a descriptive or persuasive account (as a sales person of the product or service). Something set forth for the attention of mind of your targets ("People") and media audiences.

On The Nine P's Of Marketing, The Second Question In My Ho Chi Mihn City Marketing Presentation Was?

Under the 9P's, "What is the most important of the 9P’s?”

I said:

Probably People or Potential and actual customers, using Segmentation, Targeting and Positioning (STP.).

Satisfy what consumers want in a product or service. I like Passion too involving your employees and Partners. Including finding good advertising agencies and promotional firms.

Think about how employees are working, talking and communicating with the customers.

What About Branding? How Is A Brand Defined? Presenting Marketing And The 9P's Of Marketing to Ho Chi Mihn City's Van Lang University Students.

For me it was Thursday evening Marketing presentation and for them ---Friday morning.

I answered a question on branding:

The 9P's Of Marketing delivered to Ho Chi Minh City's Van Lang University Students.

  • How is a brand defined?

Your brand is defined by what “People” or purchasers think and feel about the product when they see or hear the company’s or product’s name. I’d add employee influence here too.

It’s so important to take the time to build your brand the right way.

Developing a strong brand is a byproduct. It really comes by executing and doing the elements/

parts/things/variables/ingredients/ components in the Nine P’s of Marketing... right.

Make sure the Product or Service is excellent.

Research and planning excellent.

Need sales? Think about 9P's.

The First One Was? I Was Asked Several Questions In My 9P's Of Marketing Presentation To Van Lang University Students In Vietnam Yesterday.

I presented to a few hundred smart, engaged students in Ho Chi Minh.

The first question I answered was

“Who can use the nine P’s?”

I said:

"Small and large companies. Non-Profits. Startups. It’s about meeting the needs and wants of the marketplace and consumers. Or what I call “People.” Today, I’ve given you examples.

For you, using the 9P’s there are plenty of business problems, competition plus opportunities out there.

The Nine P’s are used successfully by product companies, service firms, start-ups, “non profits” entities and for profits “selling” directly or indirectly to consumers (B2C model), to marketing intermediaries or partners (such as industrial, consumer, retail, wholesale and professional channels of distribution), and to other businesses (B2B).

What is interesting to me, to us at Londre Marketing Consultants and at universities is that educated people, consumers, business owners, attorneys, media and other professionals use “marketing” or the term “marketing” to mean just advertising or promotion.

The 9P’s are so much more.  Gives alternatives. Solutions. That’s why I explain the 9P’s with all of the different elements and examples.

Times are Changin' for Tupperware. No Longer Associated Only With Parties. Need More Examples Under The 9P's?

"Place" under the 9P's.

Did you know that Tupperware or Tupperware containers will now be available at Target, in a major "place" or distribution shift for the 76-year-old brand or Tupperware.

They have sold its plastic food storage containers through unique, famous in-home "Tupperware parties" or its own website. They did some market tests with Target, Bed Bath and Beyond plus HomeGoods.

Or under Price and Place they will be at Target and target.com for "people" at $7.99 to $79.99.

No NBA Games? Voting's on November 8th. A Month From Today, I Put This Under "Presentation" Of The NBA Brand.

No games. Kind of a smart business and "Presentation" move.

November 8th.

NBA won’t play games on Election Day.  the NBA will promote “civic engagement.” It's about "Enabling consumers and “allowing” them to “feel” the brand."

The NBA says that they want to focus on “promoting nonpartisan civic engagement and encouraging fans to make a plan to vote during midterm elections…”

They will also distribute info on the each state’s voting process and voter registration deadlines.

Under “Place” and “Promotion,” 14 teams have used their practice facilities and stadiums or arena as polling or voting centers in ‘20.

What is "Presentation" and Branding?

I teach and consult that one of my 9P's is Presentation:

I talk about looking at “real” product and service experiences.

Look at presentation and purpose affecting messaging and buying behaviors.

This “P” or “Presentation” is the act of strategically presenting any of the different 9P’s© and/or components to your customers, suppliers, wholesalers, retailers, sales force, marketing intermediaries, clients, employees, partners, and/or others.

They may be symbols or images that represent something; a descriptive or persuasive account (as a salesperson of the product or service).

While traditional marketing is based on target audience impressions/ views/ clicks/ exposure, experimental marketing involves engaging with consumers.

"Face Time" And A Picture Phone Aren't New. Nearly Sixty Years Old. What Happened in 1964?

With $500 Million invested in technology and equipment, how unsuccessful was the “Picture phone?” The promotional headline was “Logical extension of today’s telephone service.”

It was too far out, ahead of its time, nearly sixty years ago.

Bell Telephone’s “Picturephone” was introduced and promoted at the 1964 World’s Fair.  A tiny black and white video screen.

Sales estimates were a million subscribers by 1980. Only 70 takers in the first six months. Price or cost was $160 per month or in today’s dollars about $1400 a month. FaceTime has more than 125 million regular users, worldwide.

I am a senior Forensic Marketing Expert, Advertising expert, Advertising/Marketing consultant with Londre Marketing Consultants, LLC.

I created the 9P's of Marketing.

I own a copyright for the Nine P’s/9 P's of Marketing ©2007 concepts and Marketing practices, which augment the 1960's Marketing Mix (Product, Price, Promotion and Place) or the 4P’s by the American Marketing Association (AMA), Neil Borden and Jerome McCarthy in the study and practice of Marketing.

The Nine P's/9P's of Marketing help identify marketing problems in a number of strategic areas and help develop profitable marketing’s objectives, strategies, tactics and solutions. The 9P's are insightful. They were created for the digital age.

In Marketing, the "customer," or potential consumers should be the center of the universe or "king," but they are missing in the 4P's. I feel from my study and research that there needs to be more focus on the "Customer," or "People." "People" or market segments, which utilize demographics, geographics, psychographics, behavioral characteristics and technographics, are vital, learning components of the 9P's.

    • Residents, is the key word.
    • In my 9P's, I stress that firms need to look and analyze potential, new, existing and repeat customers and users.
    • It's a special way at looking at diversity, if you review your gender, racial and other factors to your employees, customers, management, talent, board of directors, suppliers, partners, agencies, production and more.
    • To understand your "People" or market segments, you will need to or may need to utilize many characteristics, including demographics (such as age, family size, family life cycle, gender, income, occupation, education, religion, race, culture, generation, nationality, and social class), geographicspsychographics (buyers are on basis of psychological/personality traits, lifecycle, values), behavioral characteristics (needs and benefits, decision roles, user and usage-related variables, occasions, user status, usage rate buyer-readiness stage, loyalty status, attitude and multiple bases) and technographics (potential buyers may or may not have the software and computer skills. Think employees here too, which may be a vital component or components of the 9P's of Marketing.
    • Look at your actual customers. Then once a target market is chosen, the organization can develop its marketing strategies to target a market segment or market segments
    • It’s easy to market toward demographics, but brands can’t connect with people unless they learn how they think. By developing mindset-based marketing strategies, brand decision-making can better resonate with these segments, targets and audiences to increase consumer loyalty.
    • Brand managers need to look at at their customers and/or potential users. Do you understand your potential customer's purchase and usage touchpoints, their habits and how they engage with your brand? Competing for their attention?
    • Place "consumers," "People" or "potential buyers" in the middle of a circle. Find information or data on them. Add the other components in the other nine P's.
    • Post Covid 19 pandemic, I'm seeing "People" want an exceptional buying experience, which includes ethics and the company’s values. People are caring about convenience, comfort, ethics, and sustainability.  Look at home delivery of meals and everything on Amazon and Walmart or Target.
    • “People” or consumers prefer to buy “Products” from brands that share their values and “purpose-driven” movements.
    • Targeting mindsets allows brands to connect with consumers on an emotional level, which positively affects brands’ bottom lines.
    • Consumer and shopping data, plus first-party data can also help brands identify what people find valuable and important. You need to know where they live, how they work and play?
    • "People" or targeting has almost always been left out of the traditional "Marketing Mix," almost every diagram includes the four P's with Product, Promotion, Place and Price.
    • In Marketing, from my education, training, research and analysis plus testimony, there needs to be greater focus on the buyer, "customer," or "People," in both planning ad implementation.
  • Product and Services
    • Under the 9P's, it's the goods and service combination the firm offers to the target market, including variety of product mix, features, branding, designs, packaging, sizes, services, maintenance contracts, warranties and return policies.
    • A product (service) is anything that can be offered to a market for attention, acquisition, use or consumption that might satisfy a want or need.
  • Place (Distribution)
  • Price:
    • I’m finding that “People” or potential customers in my 9P’s, actual consumers are no longer buying “Products” and services based solely on “Price” and product quality.
    • An IBM study found that Nearly six in 10 consumers ("People") surveyed are willing to change their buying habits to reduce environmental impact. They found that over 70% would pay a premium of 35%, on average, for brands and products that are sustainable and environmentally responsible.
      • Advertising: There's an expression "It is only creative if the product or service sells." I wanted to add "It is only good media spending if it sells."
  • Partners

Partners, Product, Promotion And More Under 9P's Of Marketing: Targeting, Changing And Promoting Happy Meals For Adults

My example comes from McDonald's.

They are working with a streetwear brand, Cactus Plant. They are partnering with McDonald’s in creating a special adult Happy Meal called the "Cactus Plant Flea Market Box."

What the adult happy meal includes are food items with a figurine of one of the McD's characters or a "Cactus Buddy."

This is a limited-time “co-branded” merchandise which also includes t-shirts, special collectibles, and clothing like hoodies. Also a sweepstakes is part of promotion.

Marketing Of Halloween?

Halloween is more than a Starbucks Pumpkin-spiced latte.

For Halloween, with plenty of the 9P’s of Marketing being used, Planning, Product, Price, Place, Promotion, People, Presentation, Passion, Partners, it’s for the whole family and warding off evil spirts?  Oh, that's the pumpkin carving or a new special costume purchased at retail.

Yes, it's about jack-o-lanterns in every community. Supermarkets are involved. Growing and distributing pumpkins are more than a $700 million business.

But what about the costumes? Did you know about 65% of adults plan to celebrate Halloween. Many with a new outfit or costume. Retail will have more than 1,400 costumes to buy., this year.

That's a $3.3 billion dollar business. Costumes alone. And those Halloween stores pop-up for a month and are all gone by November 2nd or 3rd. They generate 70% of their revenue in the fourteen days before October 31st. Last year's big costume was a Flamin' Hot Cheetos bag or an individual Cheeto.

For families, communities, counties and cities, if it's October, it's a special time in the buying of pumpkins and pumpkin carving.

In 2021,1.5 billion pounds of pumpkins were sold in retail outlets or “place,” under my 9P’s.

As a product, pumpkins are used to make pies, cookies, soups, other desserts and breads.

How about what everyone looks forward to? Pumpkin pie to top off their Thanksgiving meals.

The carving idea came from Ireland where we got the practice of carving pumpkins into jack-o'-lanterns for our popular Halloween tradition. How are pumpkins marketed or distributed?

Usually already priced at a predetermined contract “Price” by the farmers and wholesale market, pumpkins are shipped to the wholesale market. Shipped in bulk bins or stacked loose in trailers.

Evil spirts come later at home.
