If You Want To Hype Your New Music, The Sponsor And The Super Bowl, What Do You Do In January Before Super Bowl LVII In February

We’re a month from the Super Bowl LVII.

On TV, probably in front of 100 million people or viewers.

The audience while huge has been trending slightly down the past two or three years.

Well, or so, you drop a trailer. Who? Your halftime guest performer.

You’re Rihanna you introduce your new music and the sponsor, plus the Super Bowl LVII Halftime show sponsored or partnered with Apple Music. Her last album for Rihanna was “Anti” in 2016.

The trailer included just a small part from the song “Needed Me” from that last album. So what's coming. The timing is pretty smart.

Putting it all together, we’ll see and hear her music, Apple Music, Super Bowl, the halftime show and her Savage x Fenty clothing.

We’ll see. Super Bowl is one thing. New music is another thing. We’ll see many things together.

The game is scheduled to be played at the State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Ariz. on Feb. 12th.

I have Super Bowl advertising trivia on my website

It's Only One Month From Today: The Super Bowl TV Spots? Worth The Money To Generate Real Sales? What To Look For? $250K Per Second? Really?

Under the 9P's of Marketing, which I created, Advertising falls under Promotion (eight elements or components) in the nine P's.

Every year I analyze the TV spots used in the Super Bowl. I will be at three classes at Pepperdine, next month and at Loyola Law School next week.

One 30-second spot costs up to $7.5 Million, or $250,00 a second and that's for just for the time. No creative or production.

I look for an analysis of branding, media and creative planning plus looking at the eight components of promotion in the 9P’s of Marketing. Are the spots looking for the lowest common denominator of the audience or potential customers or "People" under my 9P's of Marketing. Are the spots --dumb or smart. Or in between.

There are many alternatives, looking at the parts of “Promotion” and the 9P’s, in spending more than $7 Million in other areas to promote.

Clients could use the money spent on TV spots in Super Bowl LVII for:

  • Better website
  • More digital or social media
  • More people on phone at call center.
  • New product development. Think new menu items for a fast-food restaurant.
  • More Planning and research. More or better or more continuous Marketing research.
  • Lower prices
  • Discounts. Coupons.
  • Sales Promotion, look at instore.
  • Increased Place or Distribution
  • More PR (but they usually do plenty to make the $7M or more to stretch out the reach and increase awareness)
  • Free gift with purchase
  • Add more or better customer service
  • More sales people
  • Faster delivery and distribution

Marketers, agencies and media companies make costly, high-risk decisions. These are expensive costs and financial, spending decisions.

Ultimately, it is about generating SALES. "It's only creative if it sells." Watch the Super Bowl spots on February 12th on FOX.

Movie Time, Box Office And Marketing: “It’s Only Creative If It Sells."

There is an important expression in Marketing and Advertising “It’s Only Creative If It Sells." If it doesn't move the level of sales, positively, then it may not work.

So here’s a movie question based on Box Office or ticket sales? Putting butts in seats.

Will the top three grossing movies of 2022 get Oscar nominations. That doesn’t usually happen.

The top three films of 2022 are:

  •          “Avatar: The Way of Water”
  •          “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever”
  •          “Top Gun: Maverick”

The top grossing movies don’t always get a nomination and don’t always win.

There have been five highest-grossing movies which have won best picture:

  •         “Kramer vs. Kramer” (1979
  •         “Rain Man” (1988)’
  •         “Forrest Gump” (1994)
  •         “Titanic” (1997)
  •         “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” (2003).

By the way only two times has the Academy recognized even the top two highest-grossing movies:

  •  “Raiders of the Lost Ark” and “On Golden Pond” (1981)
  • “Tootsie” and “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial” (1982)

With Tesla, An Example Of “Price,” And Different Pricing, Price Cuts, Under 9P’s Of Marketing.

Tesla has cut prices in China and other Asian markets as consumer demand slows.

The Tesla modes are now priced at 13 to 24% lower than those in the US.  It’s weaker demand.

Did you know that Tesla is, the world's biggest electric vehicle manufacturer? Probably, but did you know they offer for different “people” or customers different car prices. They aren’t the same, geographically.

The Tesla has also cut prices on its best-selling Model Y and Model 3 electric vehicles in South Korea, Japan and Australia.

Reason, weaker demand and trying to incentive purchases.

A lot of time cutting prices are to managed inventories. This appears to be more.  They have cut prices in China for the second time in less than 90 days.

I created the 9P's of Marketing.

I own a copyright for the Nine P’s/9 P's of Marketing ©2007 concepts and Marketing practices, which augment the 1960's Marketing Mix (Product, Price, Promotion and Place) or the 4P’s by the American Marketing Association (AMA), Neil Borden and Jerome McCarthy in the study and practice of Marketing.

The Nine P's/9P's of Marketing help identify marketing problems in a number of strategic areas and help develop profitable marketing’s objectives, strategies, tactics and solutions. The 9P's are insightful. They were created for the digital age.

In Marketing, the "customer," or potential consumers should be the center of the universe or "king," but they are missing in the 4P's. I feel from my study and research that there needs to be more focus on the "Customer," or "People." "People" or market segments, which utilize demographics, geographics, psychographics, behavioral characteristics and technographics, are vital, learning components of the 9P's.

I consult and teach using these Marketing concepts and practices of the Nine P's/9P's of Marketing.

In the study and practice of Marketing, brand, advertising and marketing managers develop plans, strategies and tactics. The Nine P’s include these important concepts, practices and components:

  • People (Segmentation and Targeting)
    • In my 9P's, I stress that firms need to look and analyze potential, new, existing and repeat customers and users.
    • It's a special way at looking at diversity, if you review your gender, racial and other factors to your employees, customers, management, talent, board of directors, suppliers, partners, agencies, production and more.
    • To understand your "People" or market segments, you will need to or may need to utilize many characteristics, including demographics (such as age, family size, family life cycle, gender, income, occupation, education, religion, race, culture, generation, nationality, and social class), geographicspsychographics (buyers are on basis of psychological/personality traits, lifecycle, values), behavioral characteristics (needs and benefits, decision roles, user and usage-related variables, occasions, user status, usage rate buyer-readiness stage, loyalty status, attitude and multiple bases) and technographics (potential buyers may or may not have the software and computer skills. Think employees here too, which may be a vital component or components of the 9P's of Marketing.
    • Look at your actual customers. Then once a target market is chosen, the organization can develop its marketing strategies to target a market segment or market segments
    • It’s easy to market toward demographics, but brands can’t connect with people unless they learn how they think. By developing mindset-based marketing strategies, brand decision-making can better resonate with these segments, targets and audiences to increase consumer loyalty.
    • Brand managers need to look at at their customers and/or potential users. Do you understand your potential customer's purchase and usage touchpoints, their habits and how they engage with your brand? Competing for their attention?
    • Place "consumers," "People" or "potential buyers" in the middle of a circle. Find information or data on them. Add the other components in the other nine P's.
    • Post Covid 19 pandemic, I'm seeing "People" want an exceptional buying experience, which includes ethics and the company’s values. People are caring about convenience, comfort, ethics, and sustainability.  Look at home delivery of meals and everything on Amazon and Walmart or Target.
    • “People” or consumers prefer to buy “Products” from brands that share their values and “purpose-driven” movements.
    • Targeting mindsets allows brands to connect with consumers on an emotional level, which positively affects brands’ bottom lines.
    • Consumer and shopping data, plus first-party data can also help brands identify what people find valuable and important. You need to know where they live, how they work and play?
    • "People" or targeting has almost always been left out of the traditional "Marketing Mix," almost every diagram includes the four P's with Product, Promotion, Place and Price.
    • In Marketing, from my education, training, research and analysis plus testimony, there needs to be greater focus on the buyer, "customer," or "People," in both planning ad implementation.
  • Product and Services
    • Under the 9P's, it's the goods and service combination the firm offers to the target market, including variety of product mix, features, branding, designs, packaging, sizes, services, maintenance contracts, warranties and return policies.
    • A product (service) is anything that can be offered to a market for attention, acquisition, use or consumption that might satisfy a want or need.
  • Place (Distribution)
  • Price:
    • I’m finding that “People” or potential customers in my 9P’s, actual consumers are no longer buying “Products” and services based solely on “Price” and product quality.
    • An IBM study found that Nearly six in 10 consumers ("People") surveyed are willing to change their buying habits to reduce environmental impact. They found that over 70% would pay a premium of 35%, on average, for brands and products that are sustainable and environmentally responsible.
  • Planning
  • Promotion:
    • There are eight (8) major, strategic components or communication elements which are personal and non-personal communication activities.
    • The activities that communicate the merits of the overall product include:
      • Personal Selling/ Sales Force: Sales persons
        • Listen more than you talk. People who listen more, learn more, plus helps you position your service/product/solution or offering.
      • Advertising: There's an expression "It is only creative if the product or service sells." I wanted to add "It is only good media spending if it sells."
      • Sales Promotion
      • Collateral Materials
      • Direct Marketing (also referred to as Action or Direct Response Advertising)
      • Interactive/Internet/Web, Digital Media, Social Media:
      • Events and Experiences
      • Public Relations/PR
      • With inflation at increasing higher levels, we are seeing brick and mortar retailers needing physical traffic to survive. Gas prices at record levels are keeping customers from driving more. One stop shopping is more important than ever.

What A Mouthful: It Took Collaboration And "Partners," Under 9P's To Agree

From four companies which battle each other for programming and :People: as in consumers. It's about audience-measurement technologies and more reliability:

From a joint statement, they are NBCUniversal, TelevisaUnivision, Paramount; Warner Bros. Discovery:

“The sustainability of the premium video advertising model depends on an ecosystem for measurement that is transparent, independent, inclusive, and accurately reflects the way all people consume premium video content today –across multiple screens, connections, and devices. By coming together to establish this JIC, we can collaborate and accelerate the efforts to implement a new multi-currency future that fosters more competition, inclusivity and innovation and will ultimately better serve advertisers, agencies and consumers."

Is the consumer part better shows?

That is quite a statement to agree on.

Advertising is a part of one of the 9P's, "Promotion."

  • Product and Services
  • Place (Distribution)
  • Price or Pricing
      • Advertising: You may not know that Google, Facebook and Amazon attract 46 cents of every dollar spent by advertisers. Think about this expression "It is only creative if the product or service sells." I wanted to add "It is only good media spending if it sells."
  • Partners/Alliances
  • Presentation:
    • The act or acts of strategically presenting any of the different 9P’s© and/or components to your customers, suppliers, wholesalers, retailers, sales force, marketing intermediaries, clients, employees, partners, and/or others.

Presentation aspects may be signs, symbols or images that represent something; a descriptive or persuasive account (as a sales person of the product or service). Something set forth for the attention of mind of your targets ("People") and media audiences.

Crossover Product With Alcohol In Same Beverage Case (Place) And On Same Shelf. An Example Of Possible Confusion?

It’s not a secret anymore with so many existing and new bev-alc players.

Cross over drinks (think brands such as Hard Mtn DewTopo Chico Hard Seltzer and Simply Spiked Lemonade) are gaining sales and market share.

I created the nine P’s. Pertaining to “Product,” “Place” and “Promotion” under the 9P’s of Marketing, look at soft drinks and their alcohol variants being displayed in the same refrigerated cases at retail.

From the Beer Institute:

  • There needs to be differentiation. The institute said it “should be readily distinguishable from the advertising and marketing materials of the non-alcohol product to not confuse consumers about the alcohol nature of the alcohol variant. Advertising and marketing materials, including but not limited to displays, signage, and sampling, should not feature both the non-alcohol product and the alcohol variant.”

I am a senior Forensic Marketing Expert, Advertising expert, Advertising/Marketing consultant with Londre Marketing Consultants, LLC.

    • Different consumers or potential consumers for these new bev-alc products.
    • In my 9P's, I stress that firms need to look and analyze potential, new, existing and repeat customers and users.
    • The new products of the bev-alc players. Under the 9P's, it's the goods and service combination the firm offers to the target market, including variety of product mix, features, branding, designs, packaging, sizes, services, maintenance contracts, warranties and return policies.
    • A product (service) is anything that can be offered to a market for attention, acquisition, use or consumption that might satisfy a want or need.
  • Place (Distribution): Think beverage shelf and coolers
