Promotion For North Korea, NBC, The Winter Olympics, With The Nine P's Of Marketing.

Another way to look at reality and virtual reality.  It's not all about politics and missiles; it's also about the Winter Olympics, NBC, South Korea, let's now add North Korea.

Finally something positive to say about North Korea with "Promotion," one of the 9P's of Marketing, for North Korea and NBC.

After the first talks with North Korea and South Korea since 2015, in a joint statement, North Korea will send a taekwondo demonstration team, a group of athletes, officials, supporters and writers to the Winter Olympics in the South Korean ski resort of Pyeongchang.

In a month, NBC will present more than 50 hours of virtual-reality coverage from the 2018 Winter Olympics next month in South Korea. On its various TV networks, NBC Universal, the 23rd Olympic Winter Games which will be broadcast from February ninth to February 25th.

Yongpyong (translated, Dragon Valley) Ski Resort is in South Korea, located in Daegwallyeong-myeon, Pyeongchang, Gangwon-do with four Olympic ski areas, and with a maximum distance of 30 minutes to Pyeongchang. I want to add approximately 40 miles from Korea's demilitarized zone.

I got the chance to visit the DMZ in 2004 taking a trip north, after attending USC's  Asia Conference, Pacific Rim Executive Education Program in Seoul, Republic of Korea.

Pyeongchang is the largest ski and snowboard resort in Korea, and you will hear the NBC announcers saying that it also offers golf in the summer months. Golf only 40 miles from the DMZ.

Need more business, Marketing or advertising insights in 2018?

Visit here for plenty of insights and examples into Marketing, the nine P's, targeting or "People," product and services, promotion, pricing, and advertising strategies. Plus true, researched marketing insights and advertising trivia.

For the past 48 years, I have been a Marketing professional, a certified Forensic Marketing Expert, Marketing and Advertising consultant with Londre Marketing Consultants, LLC plus I teach and give seminars on Marketing, global Marketing and Advertising. I like giving to MBA candidates, law schools and attorneys my presentation on "What is Marketing? What is Advertising?"

Eleven years ago, I created and own a copyright for the Marketing concept, the Nine P’s/9 P's of Marketing ©2007, which augments the Marketing Mix or the 4P's (Product, Price, Promotion and Place) by the American Marketing Association, Neil Borden and Jerome McCarthy in the study and practices of Marketing.

In the late 60's I was first taught in Marketing 307 that the "customer," or potential purchasers, buyers are king or kings, but they or consumers are missing as one of the P's, in the 4P's. For marketing professionals, the "target market," "People," buyers and users are more prominent and has its own "P."  It's "People," in the 9P's of Marketing. There are plenty of targets in the Winter Olympics for the sponsors associated with and without NBC.

The Nine P's/9P's of Marketing help brand managers, marketing managers, companies, firms and business managers to find marketing problems, to identify and create Marketing opportunities or solutions, in a number of areas.

The utilization of the 9P's of Marketing help, develop and guide a company or a firm's marketing objectives, strategies, tactics and solutions.

The Nine P's can be truly insightful, in many ways and in many possible actions. They will help build revenue, manage costs more effectively.

I consult, teach and work as a Marketing, business and Advertising expert using many Marketing concepts and practices, including the Nine P's/9P's of Marketing.

So what is Marketing, you and others ask?
Marketing is a planning and execution process that involves a product or service's attributes, research, distribution, pricing, partnerships or alliances, promotion and more.

All of these activities and tasks  must work together to assure successful marketing practices.
Firms, associations and companies with the most effective marketing efforts try to thoroughly understand their potential buyers and customers ("People") and the marketplace.

Companies and new product/service development pros create products and services to meet market needs. These firms and others use marketing research and channels for understanding and communicating to market segments, a target market or audience ("People" in the 9P's of Marketing).

In the study and practice of Marketing, Marketing manager and brand agents develop planning, objectives, strategies and tactics.

For any size firm and entrepreneurs, the 9P's of Marketing include important components, elements, actions and efforts.

Let's start with planning, research, targeting, "People," one of the nine elements or components:

  • Planning:
    • NBC was awarded the rights to the Winter Olympics in 2014. The planning of Marketing starts with research and researching. This element of planning in the nine P's is a method for achieving an end, and, looking at the eight other parts, can be a detailed formulation of a program of action. I like using a phrase from John Wooden. He said "Failure to plan is planning to fail."
    • Developing and transforming marketing objectives into marketing strategies to tactics, marketing management and managers must make basic decisions on marketing targets (“People”), marketing mix, pricing, distribution, marketing budgets/expenditures and marketing allocations.
    • Review dividing the total marketing budget among the various tools in the marketing mix and for the various products, channels, promotion, media and sales areas.
  • People
    • Look and analyze potential, new, existing and repeat customers and users.
    • "People" or targeting has almost always been left out of the traditional "Marketing Mix," almost every diagram includes the four P's with Product, Promotion, Place and Price.
    • Place "consumer" or "People" or "potential buyers" in the middle of a circle. Find information or data on them.
    • Add the other components in the nine P's. In Marketing, from my education, training, research and analysis plus testimony, there needs to be greater focus on the buyer, "customer," or "People."
    • "People" or market segments may utilize many characteristics, including demographics, geographics, psychographics, behavioral characteristics and technographics, which may be a vital component or components of the 9P's of Marketing.
    • Once a target market is chosen, the organization can develop its marketing strategies to target a market segment or marketing segments.
    • Simply it's about Segmentation and Targeting. Add Positioning and you have STP, as a major first step.
    • Product and Services:
      • A product (service) is anything that can be offered to a market for attention, acquisition, use or consumption that might satisfy a want or need.
      • It's the goods and service combination the firm offers to the target market, including variety of product mix, features, branding, designs, packaging, sizes, services, maintenance contracts, warranties and return policies.
    • Place (Distribution):
      • Offering the right product at the right PLACE or location, at the right time, at the right price. It's the company’s activities that make the product available, using distribution and trade channels, roles, coverage, assortments, locations, inventory and transportation characteristics and alternatives.
      • Consider, develop and review store and non-store options, e-commerce and “brick and mortar” factors, geographic considerations, objectives, strategies and tactics, including “Partners, too.”
    • Price or Pricing:
      • “Pricing” is the sum of the values that customers exchange for the benefits of having or using the product or service.
      • Pricing decision making involves adjusting prices concerning the competitive environment, economic situations and involve buyer perceptions. Simply, all aspects regarding pricing.
      • Pricing includes wholesale/retail/promotional prices, discounts, trade-in allowances, quantity discounts, credit terms, sales and payment periods and credit terms.
      • Simply, the amount of money a consumer is willing to pay to obtain the product, but "price" is so much more.
    • Promotion:
      • There are eight (8) major, strategic components or communication elements which are personal and non-personal communication activities.
      • The activities that communicate the merits of the overall product include:
        • Personal Selling/ Sales Force: Sales persons
          • Listen more than you talk. People who listen more, learn more, plus helps you position your service/product/solution or offering.
        • Advertising: There's an expression "It is only creative if the product or service sells." I wanted to add "It is only good media spending if it sells."
        • Sales Promotion
        • Collateral Materials
        • Direct Marketing (also referred to as Action or Direct Response Advertising)
        • Interactive/Internet/Web, Digital Media, Social Media:
        • Events and Experiences
        • Public Relations/PR
      • Here are some strategic comments and questions under Promotion:
        • What should you promote? Strategic copy points. Plenty to chose from for NBC. Not as much by North Korea. They do have taekwondo demonstration team and a group of athletes.
        • Evaluate the eight different elements under Promotion and your brand's practices. Ask is there a better way? A different promotional mix. There has to be a better way.
        • What are your costs in dollars and manpower or person power? Ask "Is there a different way or ways to budget?"
        • Look at different strategic partners? Their costs?
        • To whom should you target and promote? Under "People/"Targeting, target market, audience with media falls here. Have you noticed that you may watch what you want to watch in TV programing when you want to watch it and anywhere, any screen? That affects media planning.
        • You can differentiate with price. Discounting? Special sales? What economic and discount levels should you offer? Look at revenue versus costs.
        • What form or combination of promotion should you offer? Features?
        • How frequent? Add media planning here.
      • Partners:
        • Also referred to as Alliances. Working with others and organizations which take part in an undertaking with another or others, in a business or company with shared risks and profits.
        • With "Partners" and your Marketing efforts, it is vitally important to partner and align with firms that have similar corporate philosophies. Simple but complex and difficult, have agreed upon objectives and strategies.
      • Presentation:
        • This “P” or “Presentation” is the act of presenting, displaying and putting forward any of the different 9P’s© and/or components to your customers, suppliers, wholesalers, retailers, sales force, marketing intermediaries, clients, employees, partners, and/or others.
        • Look at “real” product and service experiences.
        • Enabling consumers and “allowing” them to feel the brand. As part of "presentation," I also place “events and experiences” under Promotion.
        • While traditional marketing is based on target audience impressions/ views/ clicks/ exposure, experimental marketing involves engaging with your potential consumers.
      • Passion:
        • Those intense, driving or overmastering feelings, emotions in the planning, developing, executions of pricing, promoting, partnering, selling and overall marketing of products or services.

Another Healthy Tip With A Marketing Insight For 2018: Where Does "Supersize It" Fit Under The Nine P's Of Marketing?

"Supersize it" would fall under "Product" And "Price."  I could add "Promotion," when the counter person says "What Fries with That?" Or "Want to supersize it?"

I remember seeing Morgan Spurlock in person.  I remember being fascinated with his movie "Super Size Me,".where he  examined the influence of the fast food industry, the consequences on his unhealthy diet of McDonald's food for a  month. “Super Size Me” was a 2004 American documentary on a 30-day period from February 1 to March 2, 2003, during which Spurlock ate only McDonald's food.

Healthy tip? But first the marketing tip...You pay more but you get more.  For 2018, here's a healthier idea. Don't buy the large size. Buy the smaller size and savor it.

We Are Mixing Pizza Hut, with Toyota, Amazon, Mazda and Didi with Self Driving Vehicles and the 9P’s of Marketing.

Simply a strategic partnership and a vehicle to deliver pizza. But much more.

Most times Marketers can’t create customer value and build customer relationships only by themselves. They work closely with partners and alliances outside the firm, and with other company departments (inside partners).

Announced today at CES in Las Vegas, Toyota introduced its e-Palette, a self-driving concept vehicle with partner Pizza Hut. A self driving vehicle delivering pizzas.
Pizza Hut is also part of another alliance (mobility services business alliance) that includes Amazon, Mazda, Uber and Didi (Uber’s Chinese rival).
Changes are always occurring in how marketers connect with their customers, suppliers, channel partners and others.

                    • What form or combination of promotion should you offer? Features?
                    • How frequent? Add media planning here.

                    • Planning:
                      • If you are selling a different kind of water, it starts with research and researching what your target market wants or needs.
                      • This element of planning in the nine P's is a method for achieving an end, maybe a new product, sales, and, looking at the eight other parts, can be a detailed formulation of a program of action.
I used for many years the Dasani versus Aquafina or Coke versus Pepsi examples, in class, for both undergraduate and graduate marketing classes.
                          • Evaluate the eight different elements under Promotion and your brand's practices. Ask is there a better way? A different promotional mix. There has to be a better way.

SYHOM, With The Nine P's Of Marketing. As In Shaking Your Head Of Marketing, If Your Are Reporting To Him Or Her.

No need to Shake Your Head of Marketing (SYHOM).

Or it could read SYMH, as in Shaking Your Marketing Head, when you are in a Marketing Department or working near or with a Marketing Department and trying to please a difficult customer or client.

The four P's of Marketing are contained in the nine P's of Marketing. But the 9P's contain five more P's of Marketing.

Four P's of Marketing or in the Marketing Mix: Product, Price, Promotion and Place
Nine P's of Marketing: Planning, People, Product, Price, Promotion, Place, Partners, Passion and Presentation (c) 2007 by Larry Steven Londre.

Targeting is strategically important: Do you know who your customers or potential customers are and can your customers, clients or users tell the difference between you and your Product or Service versus the competition? In this last sentence contains one of the four P's of Marketing ("product") and one of the nine P's of Marketing which isn't part of the four P's: "People" or potential customers.

The Nine P’s/9P’s of Marketing can be used successfully by product companies, service firms, for profits entities and nonprofits “selling” directly or indirectly to consumers (B2C), to marketing intermediaries (such as industrial, consumer, retail, wholesale and professional channels of distribution), and to other businesses (B2B).

What is interesting to us is that educated people, consumers, business owners, attorneys, media and professionals use “marketing” or the term “marketing” to mean advertising or promotion.

It or Marketing is much more.

We don’t like buzzwords. Marketing is a process and has many elements. We need “marketing” is a poorly formed request. “We have Marketing” is equally lame. Sharpen your vocabulary and insist that others do the same. If you know what you need, Marketing can build revenue and save on costs. Improve the bottom line.

The right Marketing belief or practice is not merely an idea the mind possesses; it is an idea that possesses the minds of each individual employee in trying to satisfy the consumer. As Management guru Peter F. Drucker once said: “The aim of Marketing is to know and understand the customer so well that the product or service fits him (her/it) and sells itself. And this is one of the reasons I created the Nine P’s. “People” or Targeting was slightly forgotten in the Marketing Mix, and is a major, significant part of the Nine P’s of Marketing.

Developing a strong brand is a byproduct. It comes by executing and doing the elements/parts/things/variables/ingredients/components in the Nine P’s of Marketing... right. Make sure the Product or Service is excellent. Research and Planning excellent.

What does "strategy" really mean? It’s about options, choices and decision-making….As a marketing pro, brand manager or advertising professional…you need to know the options. With research and planning (one of the nine P’s), at its center, along with ”People” strategy is nothing more than making smart marketing decisions and choices.
