Is Pandemic One Of The Nine P's Of Marketing?

No, but the Covid-19 pandemic did change business and the way we look at Marketing and the 9P's of Marketing.

Planning, products, places or distribution, price, promotion, presentation, planning, people or targeting, partners and passion for products and companies were changed.

Some examples:

  • New business playbooks were created and implemented.
  • Early in the pandemic, the availability of product was a logistical nightmare for some companies and delivery services.
  • Customer service was not seamless.
  • Some luxury brand even did price increases during the pandemic.
  • Far more online payments and touchless payments.
  • Some sanitizing products became essential.
  • Restaurants set up tables in parking spaces and on sidewalks.
  • Restaurants sold liquor and handed it in bags.
  • Online ordering was up significantly.
  • Same day and next day delivery were huge.

I am a senior Forensic Marketing Expert, Advertising expert, Advertising/Marketing consultant with Londre Marketing Consultants, LLC.

I created the 9P's of Marketing. I own a copyright for the Nine P’s/9 P's of Marketing ©2007 concepts and Marketing practices, which augment the Marketing Mix (Product, Price, Promotion and Place) or the 4P’s by the American Marketing Association (AMA), Neil Borden and Jerome McCarthy in the study and practice of Marketing.

The Nine P's/9P's of Marketing help identify marketing problems in a number of strategic areas and help develop profitable marketing’s objectives, strategies, tactics and solutions. The 9P's are insightful.

In Marketing, the "customer," or potential consumers should be the center of the universe or "king," but they are missing in the 4P's. I feel from my study and research that there needs to be more focus on the "Customer," or "People." "People" or market segments, which utilize demographics, geographics, psychographics, behavioral characteristics and technographics, are vital, learning components of the 9P's.

I consult and teach using the Marketing concepts and practices of the Nine P's/9P's of Marketing.

In the study and practice of Marketing, brand, advertising and marketing managers develop plans, strategies and tactics. The Nine P’s include these important concepts, practices and components:

  • People (Segmentation and Targeting)
    • In my 9P's, I stress that firms need to look and analyze potential, new, existing and repeat customers and users.
    • To understand your "People" or market segments, you will need to or may need to utilize many characteristics, including demographics (such as age, family size, family life cycle, gender, income, occupation, education, religion, race, culture, generation, nationality, and social class), geographics, psychographics (buyers are on basis of psychological/personality traits, lifecycle, values), behavioral characteristics (needs and benefits, decision roles, user and usage-related variables, occasions, user status, usage rate buyer-readiness stage, loyalty status, attitude and multiple bases) and technographics (potential buyers may or may not have the software and computer skills. Think employees here too, which may be a vital component or components of the 9P's of Marketing.
    • Once a target market is chosen, the organization can develop its marketing strategies to target a market segment or market segments
    • It’s easy to market toward demographics, but brands can’t connect with people unless they learn how they think. By developing mindset-based marketing strategies, brand decision-making can better resonate with these segments, targets and audiences to increase consumer loyalty.
    • Brand managers need to look at at their customers and/or potential users. Do you understand your potential customer's purchase and usage touchpoints, their habits and how they engage with your brand? Competing for their attention?
    • Place "consumers," "People" or "potential buyers" in the middle of a circle. Find information or data on them. Add the other components in the other nine P's.
    • Post Covid 19 pandemic, I'm seeing "People" want an exceptional buying experience, which includes ethics and the company’s values. People are caring about convenience, comfort, ethics, and sustainability.  Look at home delivery of meals and everything on Amazon and Walmart or Target.
    • “People” or consumers prefer to buy “Products” from brands that share their values and “purpose-driven” movements.
    • Targeting mindsets allows brands to connect with consumers on an emotional level, which positively affects brands’ bottom lines.
    • Consumer and shopping data, plus first-party data can also help brands identify what people find valuable and important. You need to know where they live, how they work and play?
    • "People" or targeting has almost always been left out of the traditional "Marketing Mix," almost every diagram includes the four P's with Product, Promotion, Place and Price.
    • In Marketing, from my education, training, research and analysis plus testimony, there needs to be greater focus on the buyer, "customer," or "People," in both planning ad implementation.
  • Product and Services
    • Under the 9P's, it's the goods and service combination the firm offers to the target market, including variety of product mix, features, branding, designs, packaging, sizes, services, maintenance contracts, warranties and return policies.
    • A product (service) is anything that can be offered to a market for attention, acquisition, use or consumption that might satisfy a want or need.
  • Place (Distribution)
  • Price:
    • I’m finding that “People” or potential customers in my 9P’s, actual consumers are no longer buying “Products” and services based solely on “Price” and product quality.
    • An IBM study found that Nearly six in 10 consumers ("People") surveyed are willing to change their buying habits to reduce environmental impact. They found that over 70% would pay a premium of 35%, on average, for brands and products that are sustainable and environmentally responsible.
  • Planning
  • Promotion:
    • There are eight (8) major, strategic components or communication elements which are personal and non-personal communication activities.
    • The activities that communicate the merits of the overall product include:
      • Personal Selling/ Sales Force: Sales persons
        • Listen more than you talk. People who listen more, learn more, plus helps you position your service/product/solution or offering.
      • Advertising: There's an expression "It is only creative if the product or service sells." I wanted to add "It is only good media spending if it sells."
      • Sales Promotion
      • Collateral Materials
      • Direct Marketing (also referred to as Action or Direct Response Advertising)
      • Interactive/Internet/Web, Digital Media, Social Media:
      • Events and Experiences
      • Public Relations/PR
    • Here are some strategic comments and questions under Promotion:
      • To whom should you target and promote? Under "People"/Targeting, target market, audience with media characteristics fall here.
      • What should you promote? Strategic copy points.
      • Evaluate the eight different elements under Promotion and your brand's practices. That affects media planning.
      • Ask is there a better way? A different promotional mix. There has to be a better way.
      • What are your costs in dollars and manpower or person power? Ask "Is there a different way or ways to budget?"
      • Look at different strategic partners? Their costs?
      • You can differentiate with price. Discounting? Special sales? What economic and discount levels should you offer? Look at revenue versus costs.
      • What form or combination of promotion should you offer? Features?
      • How frequent? Add media planning here.
  • Partners
  • Presentation:
    • Before, during and after the pandemic, consumers (shoppers or "People") are voting with their wallet and pocketbook.
    • Some research says that consumers or my "People" care about business and their brands that have a social conscience (for the environment, for their workers, for societal issues, etc.). These "People" are actually prepared to pay more for these brands. They will support the brands that do, and ditch brands that don’t.
    • It's been reported that consumers or "people" are socially aware about how brands, products and businesses behave.
    • Deloitte found that “62% of customers said that they are more likely to spend with companies who have taken extra steps to ensure the safety and well-being of their employees during lockdown.”

Summer Of Travel? Year Of Travel?

Everyone will be competing for travelers.

Hotels, airlines, booking services like Google,  Airbnb, Vrbo, travel brands like Expedia, motels, parks, travel agencies, travel agents, consolidators.

This is a given unless a Covid-19 variant becomes ugly?

Just read that there were studies done by Trip Advisor, Accenture and others. "The intend to travel" is high at 61% of US respondents; they are more comfortable traveling this year since we "feel" safer and couldn't travel last year.

But the big question is how far?

  • You staycation, a vacation in your state, region, USA. Do you go internationally? On a plane?

A New Product To Enhance And Improve The Concert Experience? As Simple As A Pouch?

Generating a better concert experience/environment.

Bruno Mars used Yondr. Or the venue and his people did. He sang to the crowd: “I took your phoooooones! I took your phooooones!” If everyone did that it would be a better concert experience especially if you are behind the couple yelling "We paid for our tickets. We have rights." Annoying people can ruin it for so many others.

So what is it? It's a pouch that locks after putting your phone inside and you need device after concert to reopen the pouch.

"The highest and most beautiful things in life are not to be heard about, nor read about, nor seen but, if one will, are to be lived. (Søren Kierkegaard)

Is Netflix More Than A Streaming Service?

Netflix Is more than a streaming service for their shows and programs.

How about character merchandising. It's that, too.

They are now opening an online shop or store. They will be selling clothing, games and more based on their shows and characters just like the big boys (Universal/Disney/Sony).

What is character merchandising? It’s the promotion and “selling” of a "thing" to gain profits. It’s the selling merchandises or “product” with a character or name or title or artwork or face or tagline on it.

Merchandise or “product” can range from toys, t-shirts, cups, bottles, toys, 3D caricatures, poster or even sheets and wallpaper.

One of my 9P’s, “Partners” may be the owner of the character (for example, the firm or person who owns the IP (intellectual property) for the character) or can be negotiated by another company.

In the example of a company, the rights of the character may be licensed to these companies or partners (distributors/manufacturers) or firms and may give the owners a share of the profits, usually called royalties.

Character merchandising is a clever marketing strategy and tactic through which “Products” get created, distributed and sold.

Blending A 9P’s Marketing Example Including Product, Place, Partner And Middle East?

Ben and Jerry’s has always been about social change and social missions.

I see an example that starts with PR and press and a conflict both on a Marketing level, ownership and a geo-political level.

It’s about Ben & Jerry's, its owner Unilever and ice cream product in Israel (licensee) and the sales in the occupied Palestinian Territory (OPT). Tough situation with all kinds of political and operational issues

The Unilever owns the B and J’s ice cream brand and has a partnership with an Israeli licensee that produces and distributes its ice cream products in the region. But Ben and Jerry's isn't happy and it's board isn't either.  It wants a say on policies, of where to distribute and where to sell.

It conflict is over an the agreement of this partnership (Partners is one of the 9P's) which will not be renewed in 2022. I'm going to keep up on this story. It's not over, since the contract with licensee goes thru 2022. Plenty of time.

I created the 9P's of Marketing.

I own a copyright for the Nine P’s/9 P's of Marketing ©2007 concepts and Marketing practices, which augment the 1960's Marketing Mix (Product, Price, Promotion and Place) or the 4P’s by the American Marketing Association (AMA), Neil Borden and Jerome McCarthy in the study and practice of Marketing.

The Nine P's/9P's of Marketing help identify marketing problems in a number of strategic areas and help develop profitable marketing’s objectives, strategies, tactics and solutions. The 9P's are insightful. They were created for the digital age.

I consult and teach using these Marketing concepts and practices of the Nine P's/9P's of Marketing.

  • Product and Services
  • Place (Distribution)
  • Price:

Two Thoughts On Pandemic Related To eCommerce And Health Care?

The first thought is on eCommerce and relates to the physical presence of brick and mortar stores.

While some demographics and potential shoppers or "People" in my 9P's like to shop and it's considered entertainment, what will happen to all of the closed stores is a tough question.

Here's the kicker. It seems like everyone now know the convenience of shopping and buying online. Need or want something? Go to Google, Amazon and it's their today, tomorrow or the next day. No hassle of finding the Product, parking and more.

Second thought: The pandemic made every decision a health decision. Brands and companies had to take pages from regulators and from health care marketers in their communication and store operations.

Health remained at the forefront of consumers' ("People's) minds

  • Place (Distribution): Brick and Mortar versus eCommerce.
    • Consumers are voting with their wallet and pocketbook.
  • Passion

Let's Have A Blast. I've Collected So Good And Bad Slogans For Fourth Of July. First, What's A Slogan?

Falls under "Promotion, in my 9P's of Marketing.

It's copywriting.

A slogan can also be called a theme line or tagline. Used by sales people, in ads, on websites. A slogan is a a short and striking or memorable phrase used in promotion.

The purpose may be twofold: to provide continuity for a promotional campaign and/or to reduce the theme or idea to a brief memorable, selling message.

Here are some strategic comments and questions under Promotion:

    • To whom should you target and promote? Under "People"/Targeting, target market, audience with media characteristics fall here.
    • What should you promote? Strategic copy points.
    • Evaluate the eight different elements under Promotion and your brand's practices. That affects media planning.
    • Ask is there a better way? A different promotional mix. There has to be a better way.

    • What form or combination of promotion should you offer? Features?
    • How frequent? Add media planning here.

My List of some good and bad slogans for the 4th:

Let your savings ring.

Let's have a blast.

Sizzling savings.

Red, White & Brew, Baby.

Seeing savings and stars. Or see savings in the stars.  (get it, fireworks.)

Stars, Stripes and Savings

Start the 4th with a bang.

The biggest bang for your buck. (Get it?)

This sale is better than fireworks.

Try our all-AMERICAN menu

We can light up the sky in savings.

You’re in the Land of the free savings.

I noticed that there are few campaigns.. Did see 4th of July campaigns from Sonic, Chipote, Coke and Tostitos,

The Internal Team's Best Product Name Was CyberSuck: They Paid $16.6K To Change The Name Of The Product?

First came out in 2002 and the sales estimate or projections by the business managers were to sell 35K units.

Today over 35 million have been sold.

You don't know it as Cybersuck.

The prices can be $200 to $1600 for a advanced model of a room vacuum.

It's got brushes and it's got optical sensors. It debuted as a clean sweep and Floor Vac, but the best name the internal team came up with was CyberSuck or Cybersuck.

So the team hired  a branding firm to come up with a better name. Good thinking.

From iRobot, you know it as a Roomba, a combination of the words room and rumba.

How To Combine The Nine P's Of Marketing, Promotion, Product, Partners, Waze and McDonald’s?

First start with understanding the 9P's. And the word "pandemic" wasn't one of the P's when I created the concept and practice in the 9's. But I have written a blog post how the pandemic affected some of the elements of the 9P's while giving examples.

McDonald’s worked with Waze (the location planner) looking at the needs of their potential customers, “People,” under the 9P’s.

Under “planning” the strategies were “Fast food, now even faster.” It was during the pandemic and concerned the McDonald’s in Brazil, during the pandemic when “people” were looking for more safety. Plus spending a short time securing food. With Waze, shoppers used the “Order Ahead” feature. To find drive-thrus.

I found a quote regarding working with “partners” From McDonald’s Brazil CMO or Marketing Director; who said

  • “With this new Waze feature we were able to help consumers (“people”) to identify on the map which restaurants were open and offering drive-thru, at a time when the search for this facility was highly increasing” (during the pandemic).”
