Holiday Cheer: More Than Customer Service, It Will Be High End Alcohol And Supply Chain Variables Affecting Sales

At retail it can be about availability of "Product," "Price," stock and customer service.

It’s about reactions to Covid and retail.

It’s about customer demand, needs and wants.

For alcohol, it looks like bourbon, scotch and tequila will be in high demand during the holiday season. And the high-end, higher priced stuff.

Timing will be important at retail this December with upscale bourbons, tequilas and scotches purchased for parties and the gift giving season.

Brands do have major stocking issues. It’s about when the ports can process the containers.

There are lotteries for some rare items such as Old Rip Van Winkle 10-year, under a hundred bucks, for the 750-ml.

I am a senior Forensic Marketing Expert, Advertising expert, Advertising/Marketing consultant with Londre Marketing Consultants, LLC.

I created the 9P's of Marketing.

I own a copyright for the Nine P’s/9 P's of Marketing ©2007 concepts and Marketing practices, which augment the 1960's Marketing Mix (Product, Price, Promotion and Place) or the 4P’s by the American Marketing Association (AMA), Neil Borden and Jerome McCarthy in the study and practice of Marketing.

The Nine P's/9P's of Marketing help identify marketing problems in a number of strategic areas and help develop profitable marketing’s objectives, strategies, tactics and solutions. The 9P's are insightful. They were created for the digital age.

In Marketing, the "customer," or potential consumers should be the center of the universe or "king," but they are missing in the 4P's. I feel from my study and research that there needs to be more focus on the "Customer," or "People." "People" or market segments, which utilize demographics, geographics, psychographics, behavioral characteristics and technographics, are vital, learning components of the 9P's.

I consult and teach using these Marketing concepts and practices of the Nine P's/9P's of Marketing.

In the study and practice of Marketing, brand, advertising and marketing managers develop plans, strategies and tactics. The Nine P’s include these important concepts, practices and components:

  • People (Segmentation and Targeting)
    • Gift giving and drinking. Dining.
    • In my 9P's, I stress that firms need to look and analyze potential, new, existing and repeat customers and users.
    • It's a special way at looking at diversity, if you review your gender, racial and other factors to your employees, customers, management, talent, board of directors, suppliers, partners, agencies, production and more.
    • To understand your "People" or market segments, you will need to or may need to utilize many characteristics, including demographics (such as age, family size, family life cycle, gender, income, occupation, education, religion, race, culture, generation, nationality, and social class), geographics, psychographics (buyers are on basis of psychological/personality traits, lifecycle, values), behavioral characteristics (needs and benefits, decision roles, user and usage-related variables, occasions, user status, usage rate buyer-readiness stage, loyalty status, attitude and multiple bases) and technographics (potential buyers may or may not have the software and computer skills. Think employees here too, which may be a vital component or components of the 9P's of Marketing.
    • Look at your actual customers. Then once a target market is chosen, the organization can develop its marketing strategies to target a market segment or market segments
    • It’s easy to market toward demographics, but brands can’t connect with people unless they learn how they think. By developing mindset-based marketing strategies, brand decision-making can better resonate with these segments, targets and audiences to increase consumer loyalty.
    • Brand managers need to look at at their customers and/or potential users. Do you understand your potential customer's purchase and usage touchpoints, their habits and how they engage with your brand? Competing for their attention?
    • Place "consumers," "People" or "potential buyers" in the middle of a circle. Find information or data on them. Add the other components in the other nine P's.
    • Post Covid 19 pandemic, I'm seeing "People" want an exceptional buying experience, which includes ethics and the company’s values. People are caring about convenience, comfort, ethics, and sustainability.  Look at home delivery of meals and everything on Amazon and Walmart or Target.
    • “People” or consumers prefer to buy “Products” from brands that share their values and “purpose-driven” movements.
    • Targeting mindsets allows brands to connect with consumers on an emotional level, which positively affects brands’ bottom lines.
    • Consumer and shopping data, plus first-party data can also help brands identify what people find valuable and important. You need to know where they live, how they work and play?
    • "People" or targeting has almost always been left out of the traditional "Marketing Mix," almost every diagram includes the four P's with Product, Promotion, Place and Price.
    • In Marketing, from my education, training, research and analysis plus testimony, there needs to be greater focus on the buyer, "customer," or "People," in both planning ad implementation.
  • Product and Services
    • Alcohol. High-end. Under the 9P's, it's the goods and service combination the firm offers to the target market, including variety of product mix, features, branding, designs, packaging, sizes, services, maintenance contracts, warranties and return policies.
    • A product (service) is anything that can be offered to a market for attention, acquisition, use or consumption that might satisfy a want or need.
  • Place (Distribution)
  • Price:
    • I’m finding that “People” or potential customers in my 9P’s, actual consumers are no longer buying “Products” and services based solely on “Price” and product quality.
    • An IBM study found that Nearly six in 10 consumers ("People") surveyed are willing to change their buying habits to reduce environmental impact. They found that over 70% would pay a premium of 35%, on average, for brands and products that are sustainable and environmentally responsible.
  • Planning
  • Promotion:
    • There are eight (8) major, strategic components or communication elements which are personal and non-personal communication activities.
    • The activities that communicate the merits of the overall product include:
      • Personal Selling/ Sales Force: Sales persons
        • Listen more than you talk. People who listen more, learn more, plus helps you position your service/product/solution or offering.
      • Advertising: There's an expression "It is only creative if the product or service sells." I wanted to add "It is only good media spending if it sells."
      • Sales Promotion
      • Collateral Materials
      • Direct Marketing (also referred to as Action or Direct Response Advertising)
      • Interactive/Internet/Web, Digital Media, Social Media:
      • Events and Experiences
      • Public Relations/PR
    • Here are some strategic comments and questions under Promotion:
      • To whom should you target and promote? Under "People"/Targeting, target market, audience with media characteristics fall here.
      • What should you promote? Strategic copy points.
      • Evaluate the eight different elements under Promotion and your brand's practices. That affects media planning.
      • Ask is there a better way? A different promotional mix. There has to be a better way.
      • What are your costs in dollars and manpower or person power? Ask "Is there a different way or ways to budget?"
      • Look at different strategic partners? Their costs?
      • You can differentiate with price. Discounting? Special sales? What economic and discount levels should you offer? Look at revenue versus costs.
      • What form or combination of promotion should you offer? Features?
      • How frequent? Add media planning here.

Rethinking "Place," Under The 9P's Of Marketing?

Things change.

Behaviors changed.

Expectations have changed. Quicker seems more the norm. I say to many we are in a pandemic.

People haven't gone to convenience stores and grocery stores as much as some of  their behaviors have been altered or changed. But we see a reversal in the number of store visits in late 2021.

People want convenience.

They have busy lifestyles and we are in a pandemic or partial post-pandemic where some of our behaviors have changed. "Place," under my 9P's has changed. With the internet you can order in seconds and the "product" can be delivered in minutes. Wow.

Does "place," include those ultafast and 15-20 minute deliveries?  Of course.Think Jokr, Gopuff and local grocery stores which deliver. Add 7-Elevn's delivery services which have increased 500% in 2020 compared to 2019. They also have a partnership ("Partners," in the nine 9P's) with the alcohol delivery service, Drizly.

Place under 9P's is adding ultafast delivery services as another component.
What is "Place," under the nine P's? I say "place or distribution is the company’s activities that make the product available, using distribution and trade channels, roles, coverage, assortments, locations, inventory and transportation characteristics and alternatives.

Look at the right Place. offering the right Product at the right Price, with the right Partners and Presentation, at the right time. Consider, develop and review store and non-store, e-commerce and “brick and mortar” factors, considerations, objectives, strategies and tactics, including “Partners.”

Shopping Malls? And What To Do With Them, Including "Place," And The Nine P's Of Marketing?

Malls are a mess, especially under the Covid pandemic and regulations and the never ending increases in ecommerce and deliveries.

For these reasons and more they have lost a third of their value since 2017. You may not know that more than 20 malls, the owners have given them back to their lenders.

In my teaching and consulting, malls fall under "Place," or distribution in the 9P's. Or in three key words, they are described or part of "channels of distribution."

Place or Distribution fall under the 9P's. It is the company’s activities that make the product available, using distribution and trade channels, roles, coverage, assortments, locations, inventory and transportation characteristics and alternatives.

Look at the right Place. offering the right Product at the right Price, with the right Partners and Presentation, at the right time.

Marketers consider, develop and review store and non-store, e-commerce and “brick and mortar” factors, considerations, objectives, strategies and tactics, including “Partners.”

What to do with malls?

  • Create mixed use properties
  • Make them distribution centers
  • Make them over. Or as they say mall makeovers
  • Turn they over to ecommerce centers.
  • Be creative. Add a gym or a church. Both?
  • New housing or home developments
  • Make them HQs. Near me Google took a mall and making it a minor "Google" city of workers.

Marketing, With 9P's: It May Not Be Rocket Science, But It's Art & Science

Plenty of changes in Marketing and Markets. It's an art and a science

Especially entertainment, movies, TV, programming and streaming services

Think:
  1. Multitude of viewing options
  2. Streaming services
  3. An abundance of product and programming
  4. Pricing
  5. Finding and investing in product, people, partners and promotion
  6. Movie theaters, their attendance and rising prices.
  7. The linear pay TV market
  8. Cord-cutting
  9. Rise of direct-to-consumer options for TV services.
  10. Advertising revenue
Matt Blank, AMC Networks---AMC, SundanceTV, BBC America, IFC and WeTV--- said “It’s not rocket science. This is a company that is still delivering a great performance." Is it the past or future? And all of the changes with in the entertainment market and the challenges of the pandemic.

Talking Politics, Place, Supply Chain, Products And The 9P's Of Marketing. Gives Me A Marketing Lesson?

Americans have shifted their spending and people are working from home.

Different products are in demand. The supply chain has been difficult to maintain. I call that part of "place," in my 9P's. Place is the company’s activities that make the product available, using distribution and trade channels, roles, coverage, assortments, locations, inventory and transportation characteristics and alternatives. At the right Place. offering the right Product at the right Price, with the right Partners and Presentation, at the right time.

Consider, develop and review store and non-store, e-commerce and “brick and mortar” factors, considerations, objectives, strategies and tactics, including “Partners.”

The ecommerce affected purchasing and marketing too.

I don't post about politics often but I thought there was a good marketing lesson in the Biden Administration which did not fully anticipate the supply-chain disruptions that elevated the inflation figures.

The chair of the White House's Council of Economic Advisors said: we "just didn't fully appreciate that the supply system and supply chain wouldn't be able to process through the elevated demand for durable goods."  Higher prices. Higher inflation.

That's Price, Place and Product under my 9P's of Marketing.

Our economy and pricing by producers saw prices rise higher than anticipated.

There was a lack of product and a lack of understanding.

    • Under the 9P's, it's the goods and service combination the firm offers to the target market, including variety of product mix, features, branding, designs, packaging, sizes, services, maintenance contracts, warranties and return policies.
    • A product (service) is anything that can be offered to a market for attention, acquisition, use or consumption that might satisfy a want or need.
  • Place (Distribution), involving the supply chain.
    • The company’s activities that make the product available, using distribution and trade channels, roles, coverage, assortments, locations, inventory and transportation characteristics and alternatives. At the right Place. offering the right Product at the right Price, with the right Partners and Presentation, at the right time. Consider, develop and review store and non-store, e-commerce and “brick and mortar” factors, considerations, objectives, strategies and tactics, including “Partners.”
  • Price:
    • Inflation falls her. Higher prices than expected by the Biden Administration.
    • I’m finding that “People” or potential customers in my 9P’s, actual consumers are no longer buying “Products” and services based solely on “Price” and product quality. Price is still a consideration.
    • An IBM study found that Nearly six in 10 consumers ("People") surveyed are willing to change their buying habits to reduce environmental impact. They found that over 70% would pay a premium of 35%, on average, for brands and products that are sustainable and environmentally responsible.
  • Planning including Marketing research
  • Partners

Pfizer's Marketing Mistakes: Product and Distribution Or Place, With Potential Partners,Under The Nine P's

It was about health and healthcare measures.

Pfizer's CEO said they should have sent more "Product" and doses to poor countries.

That Pfizer should have anticipated the infrastructure or lack of in those countries.

They should have partnered with nongovernmental entities and organizations.

Sounds like Product, Place and Partners under the 9P's of Marketing.

But another one of the important nine P's is "Price."

Pfizer made efforts to ensure countries could pay for the vaccines. Prices were different for countries depending on their wealth of the countries. In many cases the shots were at cost for low-income countries.

One more of the 9P's is "Partners." Biovac Institute, a South African firm, based in South Africa, produced, and distributed, in up to 54 countries, the Pfizer-BioNTech coronavirus vaccine.

Travis Scott's Cacti, The Product Is Still Out There, But Cacti Twitter Account Is Gone. Difficult Times.

Plenty of observations of Product, Presentation, Promotion and Partner, under the 9P's. Sorry and sad for the deaths at a concert. Many repercussions.

Two brands affected by the tragedies at AstroWorld. Gone, discontinued or delayed. Nike and Cacti by Anheuser-Busch InBev.

Negative publicity isn’t good.

Also poor sales before and after the tragedy at the concert at AstroWorld.

Anheuser-Busch InBev’s Cacti agave spiked seltzer backed and promoted by Travis Scott will be gone.

In less than a year and after the AstroWorld concert tragedies and ten deaths.

How they promoted the product and brand  "Cacti Seltzer Lime, 25oz can, Missouri- Hard Seltzer is 7% ABV agave spiked seltzer made with 100% premium blue agave from Mexico and fruit juice for a refreshing and bold taste.7% ABV agave spiked seltzer made with 100% premium blue agave from Mexico and fruit juice for a refreshing and bold taste."

Anheuser-Busch InBev’s CACTI Agave Spiked Seltzer spokespeople said:
  • “After careful evaluation, we have decided to stop all production and brand development of CACTI Agave Spiked Seltzer. “We believe brand fans will understand and respect this decision.”
Nike is also delaying delay the release of a sneaker collaboration with Scott’s Cacti and his Cactus Jack label.
