Advertising And Media Placement Lessons: Why The Shift By Agencies to Work Directly With SSPs (Supply-Side Ad Platforms)?

For a few reasons, agencies and holding companies are going around the system and working directly with SSPs. They are using companies such as Index Exchange, Magnite and PubMatic.

Why?

It's been a gradual shift but the advertising and media buying agencies are tired of the hidden fees, low quality ad placements, poor quality websites, lack of understanding insights and content, lack of transparency, the complexity of the supply chains, and bad overall, faulty targeting or finding the right "People," under the 9P's of Marketing.

Another look: It's about Increasing the ability to leverage technology and closer connections to the publishers of content.

My 9P's of Marketing do include include these important concepts, practices and components:

  • Planning and Research. For both goods and services. From the founder of Intuit, Scott Cook, said: " A brand is no longer what we tell the consumer it is -- (maybe from Marketing Research never was is my comment) it is what consumers (“People” in the 9P’s) tell each other it is.
  • People (Segmentation and Targeting)
    • Look at Demographics, Psychographics, Behavior characteristics, Geographics, Technographics. Consumers and users, as movie goers and watchers and much more. In my 9P's, I stress that firms need to look and analyze potential, new, existing and repeat customers and users.
  • Product and Services, includes people and celebrities too.
  • Place (Distribution)
  • Price or Pricing
  • Promotion:
    • There are eight (8) major, strategic components or communication elements which are personal and non-personal communication activities.
    • The activities that communicate the merits of the overall product include:
      • Personal Selling/ Sales Force: Sales persons
        • Listen more than you talk. People who listen more, learn more, plus helps you position your service/product/solution or offering.
      • Advertising:
      • Like Super Bowl advertising in February for Super Bowl. Think about this expression "It is only creative if the product or service sells." I wanted to add "It is only good media spending if it sells."
      • Sales Promotion
      • Collateral Materials
      • Direct Marketing (also referred to as Action or Direct Response Advertising)
      • Interactive/Internet/Web, Digital Media, Social Media:
      • Events and Experiences, sampling
      • Public Relations/PR
    • One stop shopping is more important than ever.
  • Partners/Alliances: Most times Marketers can’t create customer value and build customer relationships only by themselves. They work closely with partners and alliances outside the firm, and with other company departments (inside partners).

Partnerships and teams that feel a connection to the work and the purpose are going to speak far more passionately together and to your or their “people,” and with far more influence.

A partnership; the joint relationships, partnerships and strategic alliances: The relationship existing between two parties; a relationship resembling a legal partnership and usually involving close cooperation between parties having specific and joint rights and responsibilities as a common enterprise. Usually plural or “Partners,” not Partner.

Ensure that there is excellent planned and natural alignment of internal and                            external agencies/partnerships/alliances around common goals and purposes.
They should be moving toward shared goals or goals.

  • Presentation:
    • The act or acts of strategically presenting any of the different 9P’s© and/or components to your customers, suppliers, wholesalers, retailers, sales force, marketing intermediaries, clients, employees, partners, and/or others.

Presentation aspects may be signs, symbols or images that represent something; a descriptive or persuasive account (as a sales person of the product or service). Something set forth for the attention of mind of your targets ("People") and media audiences. I've added "culture," too. I'm adding "culture," too.

  • Passion, including consumers and employees. Think about the lines sometimes of consumers waiting for a new Apple product

Retail And Retail Shopping Are Changing Before Our Eyes. Where Does In-Game Shopping Fall Under The Nine P’s Of Marketing?

As a start we see virtual try-ons.

Emerging platforms and sites such as Temu and Roblox are changing how "People" shop.

Under the 9P’s of Marketing where does In-Game Shopping fit? Have you seen in-game shopping with Fortnite, Roblox and other virtual sites? They are here to stay.

I would place in-game shopping under Place or Distribution and Promotion with  its Interactive component. One of the eight parts of Promotion.

We see AI-powered customer service agents and salespeople.

One more example of a trend from market research or Planning, another of the nine P’s: Amazon, MasterCard and others are rolling out AI-powered shopping services. Add brands and dozens of brands are experimenting with 3-D websites.

My 9P's of Marketing do include include these important concepts, practices and components:

  • Planning and Research. Planning for retail sales. From the founder of Intuit, Scott Cook, said: " A brand is no longer what we tell the consumer it is -- (maybe from Marketing Research never was is my comment) it is what consumers (“People” in the 9P’s) tell each other it is.

In 2026, Except For An Uncertain Economy, What Is Special about Super Bowl LX, The Olympics and NBA All-Star Game?

They are all on NBCU and they are negotiating with clients (agencies and clients), especially if they commit to a media mix of Olympics, NBA and World Cup ad inventory. Think movies, cars, snacks and pharmaceuticals.

Advertising is just one of the eight components or parts under Promotion in my 9P's of Marketing

NBCU is simultaneously selling (Personal selling another of the eight components under Promotion) ad inventory for next year’s Super Bowl LX, the Winter Olympics in Milan-Cortina and the NBA All-Star Game. They all air in February, ‘26.

NBCU starts with new advertisers and incumbents, the companies which advertised in Super Bowl in ’25..

It was only three years ago that NBCU also hosted the Super Bowl and Winter Olympics February 2022.

A Trick Question: Which Advertiser Appears The Most In Each And Every Super Bowl Telecast? Super Bowl LX in 2026?

A lot of Promotion for shows and the network which is airing the Super Bowl. It's the network as in NBC in 2026.

It's the network whoever airs that year. Think  ABC/ESPN, Fox, CBS, and NBC.

Mark your calendars for Sunday, February 8th. The Super Bowl will be in Santa Clara, California at Levi's Stadium. And on NBC.

In the early pitches to advertisers, 11 months away from the game on NBC,  the cost will be between $233,333 per second (or $7 Million) and $250,000 (or $7.5 Million per spot).

Super Bowl LX ON NBC. How Much Does A 30-Second TV Spot Cost?

The early pitch to advertisers, 11 months away from the game on NBC, is between $233,333 per second (or $7 Million) and $250,000 (or $7.5 Million per spot).

Last year the highest price paid for a promotional spot was $266,667 per second or $8 Million. And that does include creative, production or celebrity fees.

  • People (Segmentation and Targeting)
    • Consumers and users, as clothes and retail shoppers In my 9P's, I stress that firms need to look and analyze potential, new, existing and repeat customers and users.
  • Product and Services, includes people and celebrities too. Clothes and retail shopping
  • Place (Distribution) Online and now in games
